Arvind Kejriwal, the National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has directly challenged the official assertions surrounding the use of E20 fuel in vehicles. On Saturday, Kejriwal conducted a personal inspection by visiting a petrol pump and an adjacent vehicle servicing station in Delhi. During his visit, he interacted with motorists, drivers, and service technicians to gather firsthand feedback regarding their daily experiences with petrol blended with 20 percent ethanol, commonly known as E20 fuel.
Grassroots Feedback on Vehicle Performance
The AAP leader spent time conversing with citizens who had stopped to refuel their vehicles as well as those who were getting their two-wheelers and cars repaired or serviced. According to Kejriwal, a significant number of consumers expressed serious concerns regarding the impact of E20 petrol on their vehicles. Many drivers reported a noticeable drop in fuel mileage, while several others complained about a decline in overall engine performance and recurring technical glitches since they started using the blended fuel.
Kejriwal shared these observations on the social media platform X, stating that his visit aimed to understand the ground reality. He noted that the feedback from everyday commuters clearly indicated that the transition to E20 fuel has not been as seamless as projected, with vehicle owners grappling with decreased efficiency and unexpected maintenance issues. Mechanics at the local workshop also highlighted patterns of fuel system issues in older vehicle models not fully compatible with higher ethanol blends.
Clash Between Public Experience and Government Claims
Terming the official assurances about the benefits and safety of E20 fuel as "complete lies," the AAP national convenor asserted that the practical experience of the public stands in stark contrast to the claims made by the administration. He emphasized that in a democratic setup, the government is duty-bound to pay attention to the genuine grievances of the public and actively work towards resolving them rather than brushing them aside.
He further defended the citizens who have been vocal about their negative experiences with the blended fuel. Kejriwal argued that ordinary people who voice their difficulties should not be targeted, criticized, or dismissed as spreading misinformation. Instead, their lived experiences with E20 fuel should be analyzed with seriousness to find viable technical solutions.
The Broader Debate on Ethanol Blending
This political intervention comes shortly after the government issued a comprehensive clarification last week to counter what it termed as misleading campaigns on social media regarding the ethanol blending program. The official response had strongly refuted rumors suggesting that E20 fuel leads to severe engine damage, invalidates vehicle insurance policies, or causes environmental degradation. The administration had maintained that the E20 blending initiative is a safe, sustainable, and economically beneficial program for the nation, though the opposition continues to highlight the practical difficulties reported by consumers on the ground. The pushback from political figures like Kejriwal signals that the transition to green fuels will continue to face intense scrutiny from both consumers and political opponents.
