Political tension surrounding the implementation of E20 blended fuel has escalated following sharp criticisms from Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal. Speaking to journalists in Panaji, Kejriwal linked the central government's fuel strategy directly to international trade dynamics and domestic electoral outcomes. He claimed that if voters defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party in the upcoming Goa assembly election, the central administration will be compelled to withdraw the E20 policy within just 5 days of the election results.
Impact on 30 Crore Pre-2023 Vehicles and Infrastructure Gaps
Highlighting the operational and financial challenges faced by motorists, Arvind Kejriwal pointed out that the nationwide mandate was introduced without adequate infrastructure upgrades. Citing data, he emphasized that approximately 30 crore vehicles manufactured prior to 2023 are incompatible with E20 fuel blends. This figure includes roughly 22 crore two-wheelers and about 8 crore cars currently operating across the country. Despite these compatibility concerns, fuel station storage tanks have not been modernized, nor have protective measures been integrated into the transport system.
Beyond engine performance risks, Kejriwal underscored the economic burden placed on vehicle owners. Ethanol remains more expensive than standard petrol, while simultaneously reducing vehicle fuel efficiency. Consequently, vehicle owners are experiencing lower mileage alongside higher fuel expenses, compounding daily commuting costs.
Rising US Ethanol Imports and Future Blending Plans
Addressing the geopolitical aspects of the policy, Arvind Kejriwal alleged that the decisions were influenced by pressure from US President Donald Trump. He asserted that India is being converted into a guaranteed market for surplus ethanol produced in the United States. Providing trade statistics, he noted that India imported 1 billion liters of ethanol from the US last year, with projections indicating that imports could rise to 5 billion liters this year.
Furthermore, Kejriwal claimed that official preparations are secretly underway to introduce even higher ethanol blends, such as E30 and E40. In light of these potential changes, he advised the public to defer purchasing new petrol or diesel vehicles until the government provides complete clarity regarding its long-term fuel policies and technical guidelines.
Public Resistance and Electoral Consequences
Referencing the growing dissatisfaction among vehicle owners, the AAP leader noted that online petitions and public campaigns against E20 fuel are gaining traction nationwide. He urged the electorate in Goa to utilize the upcoming assembly elections as a platform to express their disapproval. According to Kejriwal, a decisive political verdict against the ruling party in Goa will break policy rigidity, forcing the government to reverse the E20 mandate within 5 days.
