The Bharatiya Janata Party is mobilizing its full strength for the upcoming Datia assembly by-election. On Monday, the party's official candidate, Ashutosh Tiwari, will arrive at the Collector's office to file his nomination papers. This significant event will see the presence of several senior BJP leaders, who aim to project a show of strength while attempting to manage the widespread resentment among party workers and supporters in the region. To address the internal friction that has persisted over the last few days, key party leaders conducted a series of marathon meetings throughout Sunday. The primary objective behind these discussions is to foster unity within the ranks and secure a clear path for Ashutosh Tiwari's victory.
Top Leaders to Attend Nomination Event
The nomination of Ashutosh Tiwari will witness the presence of prominent political figures from across Madhya Pradesh. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, state organizational in-charge Mahendra Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda, and State President Hemant Khandelwal, along with Narottam Mishra, will be in attendance. Following the submission of the nomination papers, a massive public meeting has been organized at Qila Chowk at 1 PM. According to the party's media in-charge, Ashish Usha Agrawal, this gathering will be addressed by senior leaders who will outline the party's election strategy.
Marathon Meetings to Defuse Tension
The denial of a ticket to Narottam Mishra triggered severe anger among his supporters, leading to instances of violence and stone-pelting in various locations. In response, the party has launched a damage-control effort to restore order. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, along with State President Hemant Khandelwal and Ajay Jamwal, held comprehensive discussions with Narottam Mishra in Bhopal. Senior leaders who arrived in Datia, including Agriculture Minister Aidal Singh Kansana, held multiple rounds of meetings with local workers to align them with the party’s electoral agenda. The party leadership has emphasized that the organization's decision is paramount and everyone is expected to support the chosen candidate wholeheartedly.
Electoral Contest and Background
For this by-election, the Congress party has fielded Ghanshyam Singh, who is associated with the Datia royal family. State President Hemant Khandelwal stated during a media interaction that the development work carried out by Narottam Mishra in the constituency remains the centerpiece of the BJP's campaign. He expressed confidence that the BJP would successfully reclaim the seat from the Congress. It is pertinent to note that the BJP lost this seat in the 2023 assembly elections when Narottam Mishra was defeated by Congress candidate Rajendra Bharti by a margin exceeding 7,500 votes. However, a by-election became necessary after Rajendra Bharti's assembly membership was terminated following a three-year jail sentence in a fraud case handed down by a Delhi court in April. Although Bharti was later released on bail, the election schedule for the Datia assembly seat remains set for July 30, with the vote counting scheduled for August 3.
