Tensions have surfaced within the ruling Congress party in Karnataka immediately following the recent expansion of the state cabinet. During the official swearing-in ceremony held on Monday, 19 lawmakers were formally inducted as ministers into the government administration. Despite this sizeable exercise aimed at filling executive posts, one ministerial position continues to remain vacant in the state cabinet. The omission of several key legislators from the final list of inductees has sparked open resentment, with a few lawmakers threatening to step down from the legislative assembly. Addressing the growing unrest, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar delivered a firm and unambiguous message to disgruntled party members, warning that any resignation submitted will be processed and accepted within minutes.
Uncompromising Stance on Party Discipline
Interacting with media representatives in Bengaluru, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar addressed the friction brewing inside the organization. He remarked that resignations are a routine aspect of political life and that no individual can be forcibly restrained if they decide to quit. However, Shivakumar emphasized that lawmakers must carefully evaluate their long-term political career and commitment to the party organization. According to the Chief Minister, leaders who value their political future must adhere to party discipline and remain within the organizational fold. He stressed that the party organization takes precedence over individual positions or personal aspirations.
Escalating Discontent and Threats of Resignation
The political developments gained momentum after Congress MLA Yashwanthrayagouda V. Patil indicated his intention to resign from the legislative assembly after missing out on a cabinet portfolio. Simultaneously, another prominent lawmaker, Belur Gopalakrishna, offered to relinquish his post after failing to secure a ministerial berth. These public statements have raised concerns within the party leadership regarding internal cohesion. Even though 19 new ministers took the oath of office, the decision to leave one seat vacant has left several hopefuls disappointed. It remains unclear whether the aggrieved legislators will maintain their firm stance on resigning or reconcile following internal deliberations with senior leadership.
Lessons in Patience and Historical Context
Advising party colleagues to exercise restraint, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar cited instances from his own political career to illustrate the importance of patience. He recalled earlier tenures under the leadership of Dharam Singh and Siddaramaiah, during which he was not allotted a cabinet portfolio. Shivakumar noted that while resigning was an option available to him at the time, he chose to remain patient and steadfast in his loyalty to the organization. He also referenced senior leader G. Parameshwara as an example of waiting for organizational responsibilities, emphasizing that it is logically impossible to accommodate every lawmaker in the cabinet at the same time.
Restructuring of Government Boards and Corporations
To address the prevailing dissatisfaction among party members and legislators, the Chief Minister outlined plans for an upcoming administrative restructuring across state-run boards and corporations. He indicated that fresh appointments to these statutory bodies and public enterprises will take place shortly. The tenure of existing chairpersons and members, originally fixed for approximately two and a half years, has extended well beyond its intended duration. Under the proposed strategy, resignations will first be sought from current board heads to vacate positions, allowing dedicated party workers to be accommodated before conducting structured talks with the aggrieved MLAs.
Dismissal of Speculation Regarding Siddaramaiah
Alongside the reactions from legislators, reports had surfaced suggesting that former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was dissatisfied with certain decisions taken by the party high command regarding the final list of ministers. Internal sources claimed that a few names recommended by Siddaramaiah were overlooked during the selection process. Chief Minister DK Shivakumar categorically dismissed these claims, clarifying that Siddaramaiah is not upset over the cabinet expansion. The primary objective of the state Congress leadership now centers on resolving the post-expansion differences swiftly to maintain legislative unity both inside and outside the Assembly.
