New Provisions Introduced in Birth and Death Registration Bill 2026
Home Minister Amit Shah is slated to introduce the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill 2026 in the Lok Sabha. The proposed legislation seeks to streamline the registration process and establish stricter administrative oversight to prevent fraudulent documentation and delays in recording vital events.
Under the newly framed provisions, any delay ranging between 1 to 2 years in registering a birth or death will no longer be handled through routine channels. Such delayed applications will strictly require prior approval from a District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, or Executive Magistrate. Furthermore, if the registration is delayed by more than 2 years, the matter will be escalated to the court, requiring formal judicial clearance before the record can be registered.
Parliament Clears Public Examinations Amendment Bill to Curb Paper Leaks
In a major legislative crackdown against malpractice in competitive government examinations, Parliament has passed the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill. Following an extensive seven-hour debate in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the Rajya Sabha approved the legislation on Thursday after detailed discussions in the upper house. The amended law introduces harsh penalties to dismantle organized paper-leak syndicates and cheating mafias. The financial penalty for offenders has been escalated up to Rs 10 crore. Additionally, the legislation provides for the establishment of special courts and fast-track judicial proceedings to ensure swift prosecution, alongside severe prison terms for those convicted of orchestrating leaks.
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Jitendra Singh emphasized that the amendments reflect the government's commitment to learning from the implementation of the original 2024 legislation. He informed the house that 52 FIRs have been registered since the initial law came into force, contributing to a noticeable decline in paper-leak-related suicides among job aspirants. The bill now awaits formal assent from President Droupadi Murmu to become law.
