Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a fresh verbal attack on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, leveling serious allegations regarding the integrity of the electoral process. Taking to his X handle, Gandhi claimed that during his tenure as an active civil servant, Gyanesh Kumar was utilized for political recruitment before being given a pivotal role in managing national polls.
The Match-Fixing Allegation
In his social media post, Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah positioned Kumar as an umpire and entrusted him with match-fixing responsibilities in Indian elections. These assertions were linked to a recent disclosure involving former Kerala chief secretary Jiji Thomson, who stated that Kumar had approached him with an offer to contest polls on a BJP ticket along with a ministerial position.
BJP Condemns the Allegations
Ruling party leaders strongly condemned the opposition's remarks. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that it is deeply unfortunate for opposition parties, particularly Congress, to level baseless and shameful accusations against a constitutional body based on a media report. He added that the party strongly condemns such rhetoric and highlighted that the commission has already issued a formal statement addressing the controversy.
Election Commission Meeting Amid Controversy
Against the backdrop of these ongoing disputes, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside fellow election commissioners SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, convened an important meeting on Saturday at the commission's headquarters in New Delhi, with a joint photograph of the three officials released publicly. The discussions addressed questions raised over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Following the session, the panel released a detailed press note outlining decisions concerning the revision process, ECINet, Form 6 filings, objections, and recent internal communications sent to the cabinet secretary.
