The political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress intensified after an incident during the recitation of the national song Vande Mataram at the Congress headquarters on August 15, 2026. Addressing a press conference on August 18, 2026, senior BJP leader and former union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad launched a scathing attack on the opposition leadership, directly challenging political opponents to face Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the electoral arena rather than making excuses.
Controversy Over Vande Mataram and Criticism of Sonia Gandhi
Ravi Shankar Prasad characterized the event at the Congress headquarters in Delhi as highly embarrassing. He pointed out that during the Independence Day program, it appeared as though senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was objecting to the full singing of Vande Mataram. The Congress party explained that staff members were merely arranging a chair for party president Mallikarjun Kharge during the song, but the former union minister dismissed this explanation as complete nonsense. He asserted that such a justification fails to provide a satisfactory answer to the entire episode.
Direct Electoral Challenge and Vote Bank Politics Allegations
During the media interaction, Prasad tackled questions about opposition restlessness by offering a direct challenge. He remarked that if the opposition is so eager, they should try to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi in democratic elections. He noted that the electorate no longer trusts the opposition parties, alleging that the Congress party is willing to compromise its standards significantly due to the pressure of catering to a specific Muslim vote bank.
Questions Over Freedom Movement Legacy
Prasad emphasized that this issue extends beyond a single isolated incident, pointing to a broader pattern within the party. He cited another recent event during Mallikarjun Kharge's visit to Goa, where only two stanzas of Vande Mataram were performed. He maintained that these repeated actions reveal the underlying mindset of the Congress leadership. Consequently, he stated that if the party continues along this path, it should forfeit its claim to being the sole custodian of India's independence movement legacy.
