Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stirred significant political ripples by announcing her plans to return to her homeland in December. Speaking during a virtual event, the 79-year-old leader asserted that she harbors no fear of death or arrest, despite facing severe legal threats and an ongoing political uproar in Dhaka. Even with a death sentence issued by a tribunal and an active arrest warrant hanging over her, her defiant stance has stunned observers. She boldly stated that if death is meant to find her, it should happen precisely where her parents were assassinated and their blood was shed.
Reiterating Commitment to Her Homeland
During the engagement, Sheikh Hasina made it clear that she is fully aware of the grave personal risks involved in her prospective return. She acknowledged that authorities could potentially capture, torture, or execute her upon arrival, yet she maintained that fear does not dictate her choices. Recalling that she has endured imprisonment and persecution in the past, she emphasized that staying away from her countrymen while they suffer through difficult times is something she cannot accept. Hasina has been residing in India since losing power following student-led protests on August 5, 2024, but she now feels a profound moral duty to return to her people.
Political Intentions and International Views
Addressing the objectives behind her movement, Hasina clarified that her potential return alongside the Awami League is not driven by a hunger to reclaim political office. Instead, her stated mission is to restore national development, safeguard secularism, and reestablish stability across the country. During the virtual address, she also took the opportunity to praise the policies of United States President Donald Trump, specifically welcoming the decision to halt USAID funding. Simultaneously, she launched a scathing critique of the current administration under Tarique Rahman, labeling the government as corrupt and accusing it of fostering unemployment, mistreating women, and encouraging extortion.
Legal Battles and Extradition Proceedings
The former leader faces intense judicial pressure as she navigates these plans. Bangladesh's International Criminal Tribunal delivered a death sentence against Hasina in November 2025 in absentia, linking her to the crackdown on protesters during the civil unrest of 2024. Furthermore, official diplomatic requests have been dispatched from Dhaka to New Delhi demanding her extradition. In response, New Delhi has indicated that it is carefully reviewing the request in accordance with domestic legal and judicial processes. Hasina, for her part, has consistently dismissed all the allegations against her as entirely politically motivated.
