Debashish Sharma, a former IAS officer, has been nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party as its official candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election in the Nowgong constituency of Assam.
From Administration to the Political Arena
Debashish Sharma recently took voluntary retirement, opting for VRS from his prominent post as District Commissioner to pave his way into active politics. Soon after, on September 8, he formally joined the BJP at the party's state headquarters located in Guwahati. The vacancy in the Nowgong Lok Sabha seat was created following the resignation of the sitting representative, Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi. With the political equations shifting in this constituency, the BJP has placed its faith in Sharma's extensive administrative background to secure the seat, making the contest highly anticipated.
Academic Foundation and Early Career Steps
A solid academic foundation played a pivotal role in shaping Debashish Sharma's distinguished career. He pursued his graduation in English Literature, which helped him cultivate a deep understanding of societal and human values. Following this, he earned a postgraduate degree in Public Relations. Upon completing his higher education, he decided to join the public sector, successfully clearing the Assam Civil Service examination in 1992. His initial posting took him to the Barpeta district of Assam, marking the beginning of a clean, dedicated, and long journey in public administration.
Three Decades of Administrative Experience
Over a career spanning more than three decades, Debashish Sharma took on several high-profile and sensitive administrative responsibilities. He served as the Special Officer to the then Governor of Assam, Lieutenant General SK Sinha, managing key operations at the Raj Bhawan. He also represented Assam beyond its borders as the Deputy Resident Commissioner at the Assam Bhawan in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His career progression saw him being appointed as the Commissioner of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. Before taking VRS to step into the political arena, his final posting was as the District Commissioner of Morigaon.
The Musical Bureaucrat Who Won Hearts
While bureaucrats are often perceived as serious individuals confined to files and official protocols, Debashish Sharma stands out with his vibrant personality. He is passionate about music and has never hesitated to perform with his guitar in public settings. During the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a unique aspect of his personality went viral. After completing election duties, he arrived at the Morigaon secure strong room with the EVMs. Seeing the exhausted polling personnel who had worked tirelessly throughout the day, he picked up his guitar and sang songs to cheer them up. The heartwarming gesture was widely captured on social media and earned him appreciation from all quarters.
Philanthropy and Cancer Care Advocacy
Even under the immense pressure of government service, Debashish Sharma remained committed to his social duties. He is the founding chairman and trustee of 'Deepshikha', a well-known non-profit organization dedicated to cancer care. Through this foundation, he has been continuously working to offer medical, psychological, and financial support to cancer patients and their families across Assam and neighboring northeastern states. Now, as he steps away from administrative corridors into the electoral arena, it remains to be seen how the voters of Nowgong will respond to his multifaceted experience, social contributions, and creative spirit.
