Political dynamics in the Bankipur assembly constituency have undergone a dramatic shift in the final stretch leading up to polling day. What initially appeared to be a three-way contest involving Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor has now consolidated into a high-stakes direct duel between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Janata Dal. The late campaign blitz by Opposition Leader Tejashwi Yadav, coupled with a targeted appeal from former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has reshaped voter alignment across key demographic segments.
Tejashwi Yadav Campaign Blitz Squeezes Third-Party Advantage
RJD candidate Rekha Gupta received a major boost just days before voting when former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav launched an intensive campaign in Patna. Earlier in the race, the absence of senior RJD leadership had allowed Prashant Kishor to gain noticeable traction on the ground. However, Tejashwi Yadav conducted high-visibility roadshows on 27 July and 28 July, drawing sizable crowds and re-energizing the party cadre. This late intervention effectively pushed Prashant Kishor into the background and positioned Rekha Gupta as the principal challenger to NDA nominee Neeraj Kumar Sinha.
Nitish Kumar Intervenes to Consolidate Disgruntled NDA Base
To counter internal dissatisfaction among certain communities, former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar issued a direct emotional appeal to the electorate of Bankipur. Local dissatisfaction had brewed among Kurmi and Extremely Backward Caste groups regarding specific administrative policies of the current Samrat Choudhary government. Recognizing the risk of losing traditional supporters, Nitish Kumar highlighted his governance track record, long-standing personal relationship with the area, and major welfare initiatives. His intervention helped rally around 15,000 Kurmi voters firmly behind BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha, consolidating the NDA victory margin.
Caste Demographics and Strategic Vote Blocks
The constituency of Bankipur encompasses approximately 3.89 lakh registered voters, with its electoral outcome heavily dictated by social arithmetic. Upper-caste voters make up the largest bloc, numbering between 1,25,000 and 1,30,000, representing over 33 percent of the electorate. Within this segment, Kayastha voters hold a dominant share with over 65,000 electors, supported by roughly 35,000 Bhumihars, 18,000 Brahmins, and 12,000 Rajputs, forming a staunch backing for the BJP.
Meanwhile, the business-heavy Vaishya community, comprising groups such as Gupta, Kalwar, and Sahu, accounts for 85,000 to 90,000 voters, or about 22 percent of the electorate, making them a key target for both competing camps. The traditional Muslim-Yadav combination stands between 55,000 and 60,000 voters, roughly 15 percent of the total voter base, consisting of nearly 32,000 Muslim voters and 25,000 Yadav voters. Prior to Tejashwi Yadav's arrival, Prashant Kishor sought to make inroads into this group by visiting the family of murder victim Bunty Yadav and urging Muslim electors not to divide their votes. In addition, Dalit and Mahadalit voters together account for nearly 45,000 electors, adding another important layer to the calculations. The final impact of these shifting alliances will be tested when voting takes place on 30 July.
