Political activity in Chennai has intensified significantly as the ruling Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has officially announced its candidates for the upcoming by-elections across two assembly constituencies. Party founder and Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Thalapathy Vijay, has fielded K Maragatham Kumaravel from the Madurantakam constituency, while P Sathyabhama has been given the ticket from Dharapuram. Interestingly, both leaders have previously served as elected members of the legislative assembly from these very seats, making their local influence a major factor in the upcoming polls. A direct electoral contest is now expected between the candidates of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and former Chief Minister MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Meanwhile, the All India Anna Dravida Kazhagam (AIADMK) is also widely expected to enter the electoral fray, having already invited applications from potential aspirants for the seats.
Background of Vacant Seats and Defection
These two assembly seats fell vacant recently after their respective incumbent lawmakers switched political allegiance. Both K Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabhama had secured victories from their respective constituencies on AIADMK tickets during the assembly elections held on April 23. However, following the declaration of election results, both legislators chose to leave their former party and joined Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's newly formed TVK party. Due to the stringent provisions of the anti-defection law, they were forced to relinquish their legislative positions, necessitating fresh by-elections in these segments. TVK has now chosen to renominate the exact same leaders from their former strongholds. In terms of their organisational roles, Kumaravel currently serves as the Deputy General Secretary of TVK, while Sathyabhama holds the crucial responsibility of the Tirupur South-East District Secretary.
Opposition Strategy and DMK Lineup
In response, the DMK has finalised and announced its own candidates for both constituencies to mount a formidable challenge. The ruling opposition has fielded former MLA and practicing lawyer I Parandhaman from Madurantakam, while S Suganya has been named as the official candidate from Dharapuram. Political analysts consider this by-election to be the first major electoral test for TVK since assuming power, as it will provide a clear gauge of the party's grassroots strength and public support. According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission of India, polling for both seats is scheduled to take place on October 6, while the counting of votes and the subsequent declaration of results will be conducted on October 9. With the commencement of the nomination process, intense political campaigning is anticipated across both constituencies.

Chief Minister Vijay has formally announced that the upcoming by-elections will be contested under the banner of the Secular Social Justice Victory Front. This electoral alliance also includes the Congress and the MDMK as key partners. Kumaravel, the TVK candidate from Madurantakam, has expressed absolute confidence in securing a decisive victory while outlining the campaign narrative. He indicated that TVK will heavily center its campaign around the administrative performance and developmental works executed during the first 100 days in office.
