Political friction within Punjab has intensified dramatically following the high-profile fallout between the ruling dispensation and two legislators from Patiala district. The Aam Aadmi Party is actively preparing to petition the Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly to officially terminate the legislative membership of Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra. Both representatives were shown the door by the party over allegations of indiscipline and anti-party conduct, setting off a swift move toward their parliamentary disqualification.
The dual exit unfolded when both lawmakers resigned from the primary membership of the organization, representing the constituencies of Sanour and Samana. The party leadership responded by formally placing on record that their exit was an expulsion stemming directly from sustained activities harmful to organizational discipline. With both sides locking horns, the conflict has now shifted from party corridors directly to the constitutional authority of the Assembly Speaker.
Simmering Discontent Across Sanour and Samana
Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra secured his legislative seat representing Sanour during the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. Relations between the lawmaker and the state administrative machinery grew strained after administrative and law enforcement actions were initiated against him by his own party's government. In the wake of those proceedings, Pathanmajra adopted an increasingly confrontational stance against the party hierarchy, culminating in his formal resignation from the organization.
In Samana, Chetan Singh Jouramajra had likewise registered a massive electoral victory on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket during the 2022 general elections, later serving as a cabinet minister in the Bhagwant Mann ministry. His departure surfaced publicly after the party issued its initial slate of prospective candidates, which excluded his name. Expressing his discontent, Jouramajra published his resignation letter on social media platforms, formally relinquishing his primary membership.
Aman Arora Mounts a Fierce Offensive Against the Opposition
Addressing the developments directly on social media, Punjab state unit president Aman Arora stated that the party has consistently placed the interests of Punjab above internal loyalties. Arora asserted that whenever an elected representative strayed into corruption or acted contrary to public welfare, the administration did not hesitate to enforce strict accountability and remove them from organizational ranks.
Arora also launched a blistering attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party, contending that the opposition outfit suffers from a severe lack of an independent political base across the state. He claimed the opposition is busy gathering individuals who were cast out for serious misconduct. Arora pointedly remarked that a figure who fired upon Punjab Police personnel to escape, and who was subsequently jailed on rape charges by the administration under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, could offer no genuine service to the state, arguing that embracing such figures reveals the opposition's inner hollowness.
Legal and Electoral Implications Before the Speaker
The decision to approach the Assembly Speaker places the immediate future of both assembly segments under scrutiny. Should the Speaker accept the petition seeking the formal disqualification of both legislators, Sanour and Samana would witness vacant legislative seats, requiring administrative and constitutional steps under standard legislative rules. The unfolding showdown marks a decisive turning point for local district politics and legislative numbers in the Punjab Assembly.
