A speeding car ran over two women out on their morning walk in Ludhiana, Punjab on Friday, killing one of them on the spot and leaving the other with severe injuries. The horrifying incident was captured on a nearby CCTV camera, which shows the driver ploughing straight into the two women.
What the CCTV footage shows
Footage from the scene shows one woman falling to the side of the road on impact while the other lands on the bonnet of the car. Even after hitting them, the driver made no effort to stop the vehicle. Instead, the car dragged one of the women along the road for close to 10 metres. When she eventually fell from the vehicle, the driver did not slow down and ran the car's tyre straight over her.
Who the victim was
The accident took place in the Model Town area of Ludhiana around 6 am on Friday. The woman who died has been identified as 53 year old Harpreet Kaur, the wife of a property dealer. She was out walking with her 50 year old friend Preeti along the roadside when a speeding Swift Dzire car came from behind and hit both of them.
Fatal head and chest injuries
According to the CCTV footage, the driver did not stop the car even after the collision and dragged Harpreet Kaur for around 10 metres before the car's tyre ran over her head, leaving her with severe injuries to the head and chest. Both women were rushed to the nearby Deep Hospital immediately after the accident. Doctors there declared Harpreet Kaur dead, while Preeti continues to be treated for her injuries.
Daughter married only recently
Harpreet Kaur lived in the Char Khamba Chowk area of Model Town. She is survived by a daughter who got married only recently. The family has been left in deep shock by the sudden loss.
Driver on the run, police investigating
The accused driver fled the spot immediately after the accident. Police have sent Harpreet Kaur's body for a post mortem examination. Officers are now using the CCTV footage to identify the driver and are in the process of registering a case against him. Police have said the accused will be arrested soon.
