Thousands of supporters demanding the release of Waris Punjab De chief and independent Punjab MP Amritpal Singh have entered Chandigarh after breaking through security checkpoints. Following a gathering at Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali, a mob of 2,000 to 3,000 demonstrators breached police barricades and marched toward the official residence of the Punjab Chief Minister. In response to the escalating situation, Chandigarh Police alongside paramilitary units have fortified security across the boundary zones.
Heavy Police Deployment and BNS 163 Imposed
To restrict the movement of demonstrators, the Sector 45 intersection has been completely cordoned off using heavy barricades and barbed wire entanglements. Banners indicating the enforcement of Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS 163) have been prominently displayed along the barricaded points. Security personnel equipped with water cannons and tear gas shells remain positioned on high alert to handle any sudden push. Notably, the primary barricade setup stands barely 200 meters away from the Chief Minister's official residence.
March From Mohali and Demands for Imprisoned Sikhs
The protest march was organized following a call from Waris Punjab De leaders and various Sikh organizations. Demonstrators initially assembled at Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali before beginning their procession toward Chandigarh. Alongside the release of Amritpal Singh, who remains detained under security laws, the protesters are pressing for the freedom of long-imprisoned Sikh detainees known as Bandi Singhs. The sudden breach of barricades created severe traffic congestion across border entry routes connecting Mohali and Chandigarh, causing widespread commuters' distress.
