A brutal murder in Alwar city's Khadana locality left the neighbourhood in shock after 75-year-old Dinesh Chand Agrawal, who lived alone, was found dead with his hands and feet tied and a cloth stuffed tightly around his mouth. Household items were found scattered inside the house. Investigators initially treated it as a murder committed during a robbery, but police now say they have cracked the sensational case. According to the investigation, the crime was carried out by five people together, including two minors and three young men. Police now say they have got to the bottom of who carried out the attack on the elderly man inside his own home and how.

Two of five detained, more arrests expected soon

Alwar police have detained Karan, son of Ramjilal, a resident of Darukuta locality, and Teju alias Tejpal, who lives in a government quarter in Malviya Nagar. Police say two minors were also involved in the crime and will be taken into custody soon. Preparations are also underway to arrest another young man linked to the case. That means two of the five suspects are currently in police custody, while the remaining three are expected to be caught shortly. Police said all five accused are connected to each other and had planned the crime together.

12 hours of non-stop work cracked the case

Identifying the accused was far from easy, police said. Investigation teams worked continuously for 12 hours without a break, relying on technical evidence and other leads to finally trace the culprits. It was this sustained effort that allowed police to solve such a high-profile case within a short span of time.

Hands and feet bound, mouth stuffed with cloth, death by suffocation

The police investigation found that the attackers first tied Dinesh Chand Agrawal's hands and feet, and then bound a cloth tightly around his mouth. The inquiry established that he died of suffocation, meaning this was the method used to kill him. After the attack, the accused continued searching the house for valuables. Police said coins were also stolen from the house, which the accused later sold in the market. Investigation into the case is still ongoing.

No one knew for nearly 20 hours

Dinesh Chand Agrawal lived alone in his house in Khadana locality, which is why almost 20 hours passed after the crime before anyone found out. According to his family, he used to go every day for lunch and dinner to his son's house in Scheme Number 4. But the night he did not turn up for his meal, the family grew worried. His son and granddaughter went to his house around 9:30 pm to check on him.

Body found on a cot, cupboards broken and belongings scattered

When the family members entered the house, they found Dinesh Chand Agrawal's body lying on a cot in the room, with his hands, feet and mouth tied with cloth. The cupboards in the house were found open and broken, while belongings lay scattered around. Dinesh Chand Agrawal was the maternal uncle of Ajay Agrawal, a former chairman of the Municipal Council, and the cousin of Dr Subodh Agrawal, a former CMHO. As soon as the news broke, senior police officers rushed to the spot. Teams from the FSL and a dog squad were called in, and nearby CCTV cameras were examined as well.

Did knowledge of his cash and new currency notes trigger the attack?

Former chairman Ajay Agrawal had said that Dinesh Chand Agrawal was an extremely self-respecting man who often brought fresh currency notes from the bank to distribute among people in need, and that he sometimes kept cash at home. This has raised suspicion that someone was aware of this and the crime was planned on the basis of that information. Police say the mystery has largely been solved, and action against the remaining accused will follow soon, with the investigation into the stolen items and the full sequence of events still continuing.

What this means for you

  • Across India: The case is a reminder for families to keep closer tabs on elderly relatives living alone, especially those known to keep cash or new currency notes at home.
  • In Alwar: The quick breakthrough may reassure residents, though vigilance will likely continue in the area until the remaining three accused, including the two minors, are taken into custody.
