Frustration over the acute scarcity of Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertilizer spilled onto the streets in Rajasthan's Baran district on Monday, as agitated cultivators launched a sit-in demonstration. A large gathering of farmers assembled near Bank on Shahabad Road, blocking the thoroughfare in protest against the unavailability of crucial agricultural inputs. Having waited for hours without receiving sufficient fertilizer, the crowd decided to halt traffic completely after a local retail shop abruptly shut its doors, leaving hundreds of growers stranded without supplies.
Protracted Delays and Abrupt Shop Closure Ignite Anger
Farmers who traveled to the retail outlet explained that they had arrived early in the day, hoping to secure their required quota of DAP fertilizer. According to the agitating growers, they endured prolonged waiting periods outside the establishment. However, instead of dispensing adequate stocks to meet agricultural demands, the merchant decided to close the shop. This unexpected shutdown served as the tipping point for the crowd. Demonstrators stressed that they had abandoned essential field operations during the peak sowing window just to purchase fertilizer. Returning home empty-handed was unacceptable, prompting them to move directly into the roadway and demand immediate government intervention for fertilizer distribution.
Traffic Paralyzed with Long Vehicular Queues
The impromptu blockade brought regular vehicular movement on Shahabad Road to an immediate standstill. In a matter of minutes, extensive queues of trucks, buses, commercial carriers, and private cars accumulated on both sides of the corridor. Commuters and motorists faced severe inconvenience as travel came to a halt, leaving dozens of vehicles trapped in the gridlock for extended intervals. The demonstrating farmers maintained an uncompromising stance, stating unequivocally that their agitation would persist until authorities intervened to guarantee a steady and sufficient supply of DAP to every cultivator waiting on the spot.
Absence of Officials Deepens Growing Resentment
The resentment among the crowd intensified further due to the prolonged absence of administrative and police representatives. Even after alerts regarding the road blockade and escalating farmer unrest were communicated to relevant administrative officers and police personnel, no official arrived at the location to engage with the agitating public. This apparent administrative apathy exacerbated public anger. Farmers underscored that the current preparatory phase of the Rabi crop season requires immediate fertilizer application, and any delay directly threatens crop yields and seasonal output. Consequently, the farming community demanded decisive action against hoarding, an end to artificial supply deficits, and the prompt distribution of DAP strictly based on agricultural requirements.
