The nomination paper filed by Jwala Prasad, the official party candidate from ward number 111, has been rejected by the returning officer. According to information shared by election officials, a criminal case against Jwala Prasad is pending before a competent court. The court had already taken cognizance of the matter, and charges were formally framed against him on 29 August 2024. Under the strict guidelines and rules laid down by the Election Commission regarding cases carrying a sentence of five years or more where charges have been framed, contesting elections faces stringent legal scrutiny. Based on these legal provisions and technical grounds, the returning officer found Jwala Prasad's nomination invalid during scrutiny and rejected it. Losing their official face in ward 111 even before the polling begins is being viewed as a major strategic blow to the Congress party.
Sharp reaction and allegations by MLA Amin Kagzi
Following the cancellation of the Congress candidate's nomination, local MLA Amin Kagzi has raised serious questions regarding the functioning and methodology of the district administration and election officials. Expressing his strong displeasure, he stated that complete information had been duly provided in the nomination form submitted by the party. MLA Amin Kagzi claimed that he had held detailed discussions with the district collector regarding this entire episode and had even sent two lawyers along to clarify the situation. It was considered certain that he would contest the election, yet the nomination was rejected at the very last moment.
Direct allegations of pressure from the ruling party
Targeting the ruling camp directly, he alleged that the administration was working under political pressure. He pointed out that while the affidavit and nomination of the Congress candidate were rejected with immediate effect, the cases involving Bharatiya Janata Party candidates were being handled leniently by merely issuing notices and seeking replies. He demanded that if any BJP candidate has provided incorrect information or violated rules, their nomination should also be cancelled immediately without any double standards.
