A major technical disruption occurred at the Kalisindh Thermal Power Plant located in the Jhalrapatan region of Jhalawar district, Rajasthan. The facility experienced a sudden steam line blast in its first unit, causing the pipeline to break and leading to massive steam leakage. Following the malfunction, power plant authorities immediately shut down the 600 megawatt (MW) unit. This unexpected operational halt has resulted in a direct deficit of 600 MW of power supply destined for the national grid and regional distribution centers.
Steam Line Pressure Explosion and Worker Safety
The incident took place on Thursday when steam pressure within the first unit's conveyance system surged beyond permissible limits. Incapable of sustaining the elevated pressure, the main line ruptured with a loud explosion. Despite the severity of the blast and the immediate release of high-pressure steam, all workers and technical personnel present near the site escaped unhurt. Operations were halted swiftly to prevent further damage to surrounding infrastructure and to secure the plant environment.
Maintenance Lapses and Subpar Coal Quality Identified
Initial insights into the breakdown point toward underlying maintenance issues and fuel quality concerns. Operating sources indicate that the thermal plant has recently been receiving inferior quality coal, which impacts combustion stability and system pressure. Furthermore, delays in scheduling mandatory shutdowns for routine boiler maintenance and unit overhauls are believed to have contributed significantly to the line failure. The lack of timely technical servicing exacerbated wear on the steam line, ultimately triggering the rupture.
High Level Inspection and Repair Initiatives
Upon receiving news of the blast, KL Meena, Director of the Rajasthan Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, visited the thermal power station situated in Undal village. He conducted an on-site inspection and interacted with staff, engineers, and plant workers to evaluate the extent of the damage. Following the evaluation, thermal engineers initiated a comprehensive annual repair and maintenance drive for the affected unit. Technical crews are currently working to repair the steam piping and restore structural integrity.
Impact on Power Generation and Grid Supply
The Kalisindh Thermal Power Plant operates with a total installed capacity of 1,200 MW, comprised of two identical units generating 600 MW each. Power produced here is fed directly into the national grid and transmitted to critical load centers across Rajasthan. With the complete shutdown of the first unit, total power generation at the facility has been slashed by half. Until the restoration process is finalized, electricity will be produced exclusively by the second 600 MW unit. Authorities expect the repair work to be completed at the earliest to resume full-scale operations.
