The administration of Government Medical College in the Barmer district of Rajasthan has initiated sweeping disciplinary measures following formal complaints of junior student harassment. According to the victims, senior students subjected them to severe mental torment, explicit verbal abuse, and the unsolicited distribution of obscene digital content. Confronted with these grave allegations, the college leadership immediately activated its anti-ragging committee to carry out an inquiry. Acting upon the findings and formal recommendations submitted by the panel, the institution enforced its largest disciplinary crackdown to date against 80 students involved in the misconduct.
Hostel Expulsions Trigger Widespread Unease
The punitive actions hit residential quarters hardest, where the worst instances of harassment were documented. Taking into account the gravity of the offences, 13 senior students received permanent expulsion orders from the hostel premises, barring them from residing on campus grounds for the remainder of their studies. In addition, 11 other students faced temporary eviction from the hostel for a period of 30 days. The severity and scale of these immediate evictions sent shockwaves throughout the residential student community and across the wider college campus.
Academic Suspension and Strict Disciplinary Cautions
The institutional sanctions extended directly into the academic timetable. Six students were placed under full academic suspension lasting 60 days, barring them completely from institutional academic activities during this window. Another group of seven offending students received a 30-day suspension specifically prohibiting them from attending scheduled lectures and classes. Beyond these active suspensions, the disciplinary council handed formal warnings to 34 other students, putting them on strict notice that any future involvement in ragging practices would trigger outright and immediate expulsion from the medical college.
Sanctions on Junior Batch and Year-Long Extracurricular Bans
The investigation revealed that misconduct was not entirely restricted to senior ranks, prompting the administration to issue formal conduct warnings to five junior students from the 2026 batch to ensure campus order. Furthermore, comprehensive extracurricular bans were levied against all punished students as part of the ruling. The sanctioned individuals are entirely barred from participating in any college sports matches or athletic events for the next year. Additionally, they cannot take part in any cultural celebrations, festivals, or related college functions for a full 12-month period.
