Sikar district in Rajasthan is confronting a concerning monsoon slowdown this season, with agricultural activity coming under significant strain due to a prolonged rain deficit. Recent data released by the Irrigation Department indicates that average rainfall during the auspicious month of Sawan has plummeted to its lowest point in four years. Despite passing through a major portion of the official 92-day monsoon timeframe, persistent cloud movements have failed to yield substantial precipitation, leaving local water reservoirs depleted and creating critical moisture stress for standing kharif crops.
Sawan Rainfall Trends and Multi-Year Comparison
According to official records maintained by the Irrigation Department, Sikar district registered an average rainfall of just 101.77 mm during the Sawan period in 2026. This represents a steep decline when compared against precipitation levels over the preceding four years. For instance, the district received 226.44 mm of rain during Sawan in 2025, 268.05 mm in 2024, and 268.76 mm in 2023. Even during the 2022 Sawan season, the region accumulated 171.06 mm of rainfall. Consequently, the precipitation recorded during Sawan this year stands roughly 125 mm lower than the figure logged in the previous year, escalating anxieties among the farming community.
Monsoon Season Progress and Block-Wise Rainfall Figures
The annual monsoon calendar for Sikar district spans 92 days, running from June 15 through September 15. With 71 days elapsed by August 25, the cumulative seasonal precipitation across the district has barely reached 300 mm. This total lags behind the long-term normal seasonal average of 535 mm by approximately 235 mm. During the corresponding timeframe in earlier years, Sikar recorded 282 mm in 2022, 387 mm in 2023, 535 mm in 2024, and 535 mm in 2025, underlining the extent to which the current season has fallen short.
Disparities across administrative blocks further highlight the uneven nature of precipitation this year. Between June 15 and August 25, Neem ka Thana logged the highest rainfall within the district at 258 mm, though this remains substantially lower than its previous tallies of 484 mm in 2023 and 411 mm in 2025. Historical highs in other blocks include 229 mm in Sikar city in 2022 and 413 mm in Reengus in 2024. Conversely, Sikar Rural has emerged as the driest block for the second consecutive year, recording a meager 47 mm in 2026 after registering 84 mm in 2025. In past years, lowest block rainfall figures included 110 mm in Nechwa in 2024, 121 mm in Reengus in 2023, and 109 mm in Khandela in 2022.
Depleted Dam Storage and Agricultural Impact
The pronounced shortfall in rain has severely hindered water inflow into the district's key reservoirs and water storage bodies. In July of the previous year, robust spells of rainfall triggered noticeable inflows into multiple dams, including Raipur Patan, Kot, Kotdi, Bhudoli, and Haripura. In contrast, reservoir levels have failed to replenish this year, with virtually no significant water entering any of the structures. Over the past fortnight, despite high humidity levels and frequent cloud cover overhead, meaningful downpours have remained elusive, depriving agricultural fields of vital moisture.
Key seasonal crops such as pearl millet, peanut, and pulses are demonstrating clear signs of moisture deficiency. To prevent crop failure, farmers across the district are being forced to draw heavily upon underground water sources, utilizing wells and tubewells for supplementary irrigation and incurring higher operational costs.
Irrigation Department Assessment and Outlook
Addressing the worsening scenario, Irrigation Department XEN Nathmal Khedar confirmed that overall rainfall across the district has dropped dramatically compared to previous years. As a direct consequence, storage levels in local water bodies and dams remain negligible. Khedar warned that if monsoon activity does not intensify before the formal end of the season on September 15, the vast majority of dams in Sikar district will remain entirely empty heading into the dry months.
