A unique educational initiative aimed at promoting wildlife conservation and environmental awareness was organized at Madhuram Secondary School in Pali. The primary objective of the workshop was to dispel long-standing fears and misconceptions about snakes among school children. During the interactive session, young students learned about reptile behavior and ecology, with many gaining enough confidence to safely hold snakes under expert supervision.
Ecological Importance of Snakes in Nature
Addressing the students as the keynote speaker, renowned local snake expert Javed Bhai Pathan emphasized that public fear of snakes often stems from ignorance. He explained that snakes play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. By preying on crop-damaging rodents and harmful pests, snakes act as natural controllers in agricultural ecosystems. Eliminating snakes disrupts this delicate balance, leading to uncontrolled rodent populations that harm food production.
Differentiating Venomous and Non-Venomous Species
Pathan educated the students on identifying common snake species, pointing out that the vast majority of snakes are non-venomous and pose no threat to humans. Unfortunately, many harmless snakes are killed due to panic and lack of awareness. He clarified that snakes do not attack humans intentionally. Biting is merely a defensive reaction when the reptile feels threatened, cornered, or accidentally stepped upon.
Essential First Aid for Snakebites
The session also covered vital first aid protocols in the event of a snakebite. Students were instructed to remain calm, keep the victim immobilized, and seek immediate emergency medical care at a hospital rather than relying on unproven remedies. Pathan issued a strict warning against attempting to handle or catch snakes without professional training.
Encouraging Safe Rescue Protocols
Concluding the workshop, Pathan urged students and faculty members never to harm a snake found near residential areas or schools. Instead, citizens should contact trained snake rescuers or local forest officials. Once safely rescued, the reptiles are released back into suitable natural habitats near water bodies or forests. The training successfully fostered empathy for wildlife and highlighted the importance of biodiversity conservation among young minds.
