The chronicle of India’s freedom movement and Telangana’s regional history features remarkable figures who dedicated their lives to defending the dignity and rights of the public. Kastala Ramkistu was one such visionary leader from the Adilabad region of Telangana who rose as a beacon of sacrifice and selfless public service. During the era of Nizam rule, he stood fearlessly against the oppression of the Razakars, committing his personal resources and life to uplift the landless and marginalized communities.
Resisting Nizam Rule and Facing Shoot-at-Sight Orders
According to historical scholar Shahid Umer, Kastala Ramkistu was born on 16 August 1918. He took an active part in both the broader Indian independence movement and the Telangana armed struggle aimed at ending autocratic Nizam rule. As Razakar atrocities escalated across the region, Ramkistu mounted a fierce local resistance. Alarmed by his growing popularity and defiance, the Nizam administration issued a strict shoot-at-sight order against him. Undeterred by the constant threat to his life, he continued to mobilize support for landless laborers and oppressed social groups.
Personal Sacrifice: Selling Land to Fuel the People’s Struggle
Sustaining a prolonged struggle required continuous financial support for activists and rural families. To keep the movement alive and assist his fellow freedom fighters, Kastala Ramkistu sold off his own private agricultural land. This selfless action eventually left him without any personal property or shelter of his own. Moved by his extreme sacrifice, the very impoverished communities he fought to protect rallied together and collectively constructed a modest home for their leader to reside in.
1967 Election Victory and Distribution of 20,000 Acres of Land
The deep trust built through years of dedicated service culminated in the 1967 assembly elections, where the voters of Adilabad elected Kastala Ramkistu as their representative to the legislative assembly. As an elected lawmaker, he prioritized land reform and rural welfare above all political gain. During his tenure, he successfully secured official titles for roughly 20,000 acres of government land and distributed them to landless citizens. Additionally, he ensured that thousands of families in Adilabad city and surrounding villages received land plots for housing.
Industrial Progress, Farmer Advocacy, and Enduring Legacy
Kastala Ramkistu also played a pivotal role in driving industrial and agricultural infrastructure in the region. He was instrumental in establishing the CCI spinning mill in Adilabad and facilitated the initial land survey for the Satnala irrigation project. Furthermore, when 109 acres of agricultural land were acquired for the development of the Adilabad airstrip, he championed the cause of local farmers to guarantee they received fair and adequate compensation. Kastala Ramkistu passed away on 8 September 1985, but his memory lives on today through places like KRK Colony in Adilabad, standing as a reminder of a leader who viewed politics purely as a tool for public service.
