Amid the ongoing heat of urban municipal elections in Rajasthan, the political temperature in the state has flared up over the upcoming 2026 Panchayati Raj elections. With the voting and administrative processes in urban municipalities nearing completion, attention has shifted to the rural local bodies. However, a sudden administrative decision to postpone the ward reservation and lottery process, which is a crucial precursor to the panchayat elections, has ignited a major political storm. The main opposition party, Congress, has launched a blistering attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, alleging that the ruling party is running away from the electoral battlefield out of fear of a massive defeat. Meanwhile, the State Election Commission has stepped in to clarify that it is actively working to conduct the panchayat elections before the November 15 deadline.
The Postponement of the Reservation Lottery
According to the previously announced official schedule, the reservation and ward lottery process was slated to take place across Rajasthan on September 17 and 18. Under this program, the district-level lottery to determine reservations for Zila Parishad members and heads of Panchayat Samitis was scheduled for September 17. Following this, the block-level lottery for Gram Panchayat sarpanches and ward panches was to be held on September 18. However, just before the process could begin, the Panchayati Raj Department sent a formal letter to the State Election Commission requesting a postponement. The department argued that during this exact timeframe, election authorities would be preoccupied with critical tasks related to the urban local body polls, such as verifying nomination papers, managing candidate withdrawals, and allotting symbols for the heads of municipal bodies.
Administrative Overlap and Collectors’ Practical Challenges
The primary administrative challenge behind this postponement stems from the overlapping responsibilities of District Collectors. Elections for the heads of municipal bodies are scheduled to take place on September 21 and 22. Since District Collectors serve as the district election officers for both municipal and panchayat elections, they requested the government to delay the panchayat lottery. The collectors pointed out that managing two massive democratic exercises simultaneously could lead to serious logistical and administrative confusion. Acknowledging these practical hurdles, the State Election Commission decided to put the lottery scheduled for September 17 and 18 on hold. However, the commission has not yet announced any fresh dates for the process, leaving candidates and local leaders in a state of suspended anticipation.
Election Commission Targets Mid-November Deadline
In the wake of these administrative adjustments and the subsequent political outcry, State Election Commissioner Rajeshwar Singh cleared the air regarding the election timeline. He admitted that the commission is operating under a very tight schedule, but maintained that every effort is being made to successfully hold the panchayat elections before November 15. To ensure no further delays, the State Election Commission has directed all District Election Officers to immediately update, correct, and finalize the voter lists. The commission has instructed district officials to accelerate preparations for the Panchayati Raj elections on a war footing as soon as the municipal election process concludes, ensuring that all logistical arrangements are in place well before the voting dates.
Congress State President Govind Singh Dotasra Attacks the Government
The administrative decision to delay the lottery has provided fresh ammunition to the Rajasthan Congress, which has intensified its criticism of the Bhajanlal government. Govind Singh Dotasra, the President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee, took to the social media platform X to share a copy of the official postponement order issued by the commission. In his post, Dotasra claimed that the BJP is deeply rattled by its declining public support and poor performance in urban wards during the municipal polls. He asserted that the ruling party is actively looking for excuses to avoid facing the electorate in the rural panchayat elections.
Dotasra Questions BJP's Electoral Intentions and Policies
Dotasra further questioned the sincerity of the BJP's national policies, pointing out the contradiction in their governance model. He argued that the sudden order to suspend the proposed reservation lottery on September 17 and 18 clearly demonstrates that the BJP is terrified of democratic accountability and is trying to delay its inevitable defeat. The Congress leader sarcastically pointed out that while the BJP constantly promotes its grand vision of 'One State, One Election' across the country, it is failing miserably to conduct municipal and panchayat elections together even within a single state under its own administration.
Accusations of Holding Democracy Hostage
Highlighting the widespread public anger in rural areas, Dotasra stated that the BJP is desperate to delay not just the final voting, but even the preliminary processes like the reservation lottery, because they fear the wrath of rural voters. He raised sharp questions, asking how long the BJP intends to run away from elections and how long it will keep the state's democratic machinery hostage. He warned the ruling party that while they can easily push back administrative dates to avoid the public mandate, they cannot escape the voters forever. Dotasra concluded by claiming that after the setback in the municipal elections, the rural population in Rajasthan is eagerly waiting to deliver a resounding response to the BJP in the upcoming panchayat polls.
