Monsoon has fully arrived in Rajasthan, and weather conditions across the state are shifting by the hour. The Jaipur Meteorological Centre, part of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, has issued an important nowcast weather warning for July 2, 2026. According to the latest bulletin, a strong weather system has become active over the central, eastern and northern parts of the state, raising the likelihood of moderate to heavy rain along with intense thunder in Jaipur, Ajmer, Tonk, Bhilwara and more than a dozen other districts over the next few hours. The department has issued orange and yellow code alerts for these regions and has strongly urged residents to stay indoors during the bad weather.
Dark clouds gather over Jaipur and Kotputli-Behror
The weather has suddenly turned in the state capital Jaipur as well as in the newly formed district of Kotputli-Behror. The Jaipur Meteorological Centre has issued a specific warning of intense thunder and lightning for both districts. Thick, dark clouds have gathered over Jaipur and its surrounding areas. The department says sudden stormy winds of 40 to 60 km/h could blow through the region, which may damage weak structures, hoardings and trees. Along with this, light to moderate rain is expected in these cities, with heavy rain in some pockets, which could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Ajmer, Beawar and Tonk on alert for 60 km/h winds
The weather has also turned dangerous in the central Rajasthan districts of Ajmer, the newly formed Beawar, and Tonk. IMD has placed all three districts in the high-risk orange alert category. Thunder and lightning are expected here, along with sudden winds of 40 to 60 km/h and a strong possibility of lightning strikes. This burst of monsoon activity will bring down temperatures in Tonk and Ajmer, but the strong winds could cause minor damage to kutcha houses, huts and electricity poles. The department has advised motorists to exercise extra caution and avoid parking vehicles under trees.
Double threat of thunder for Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Bundi
The monsoon system has also taken firm hold over Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Bundi in the Mewar and Hadoti regions. The Jaipur weather centre's bulletin states that Bhilwara and Chittorgarh could see moderate to intense rainfall, while some parts of Bundi district are also expected to witness sudden strong winds accompanied by heavy showers. The department has made clear that lightning strikes are possible in these areas, making it essential to move farmers working in the fields and cattle kept in the open to safe locations without delay.
Yellow alert for Sikar, Alwar, Sawai Madhopur and other districts
Besides the districts under orange alert, IMD has also issued a yellow alert for a large part of Rajasthan. Weather is expected to change in the Shekhawati region's Sikar, Churu and Jhunjhunu districts. In addition, districts including Pali, Rajsamand, Kota, Baran, Jhalawar, Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Dausa, Alwar, Udaipur, Salumbar, Pratapgarh, Dungarpur, Banswara, Nagaur and Didwana-Kuchaman could see light to moderate thunder in some places, along with sudden winds of 30 to 40 km/h and light to moderate rain. The risk level is comparatively lower in these districts, but local residents have still been advised to remain alert.
Western Rajasthan gets a reprieve for now
Western districts such as Jaisalmer, Barmer, Phalodi, Jodhpur, Balotra, Jalore and Bikaner have been marked green, meaning no warning, on IMD's latest map. In other words, no major alert is currently expected for these areas, and weather there is likely to remain relatively normal.
What to do, and what to avoid, during lightning
IMD has advised the public not to stand under trees during thunderstorms, to disconnect electrical appliances immediately, to avoid touching metal objects, and to take shelter only inside safe, solid buildings.
