A distressing incident of physical assault involving a 63-year-old temple priest has triggered widespread resentment among the residents of Jaipur. The confrontation, which took place inside a temple premises within the jurisdiction of the Kardhani police station, was caught on security cameras. Following the circulation of this video on social media platforms, local residents have demanded swift justice, leading the police authorities to initiate a formal probe into the attack.
The victim, identified as Pandit Ramkrishna, served as the chief priest at a Shiva temple located in Ganesh Nagar. In his formal statement submitted to the local police, he recounted the events of September 25. On that Wednesday evening, while performing his daily religious rituals, he had gathered some children from the local neighborhood to teach them religious lessons. The priest emphasized that the class was being conducted in a quiet, traditional manner without the assistance of any sound-amplification equipment like microphones or loudspeakers.
Escalation and Physical Assault
According to the official complaint, the peaceful atmosphere was disrupted when three individuals, identified as Harish Chaturvedi, Devansh Chaturvedi, and Ritu Chaturvedi, entered the temple. They reportedly began arguing with the elderly priest, complaining about the noise levels coming from the lesson. Despite the priest's explanations that no speaker was being used, the argument escalated rapidly. The three accused allegedly crossed all boundaries of respect and resorted to physical violence.
The senior priest was subjected to a violent beating inside the holy sanctum. Pandit Ramkrishna stated that the attackers shoved him brutally, causing him to fall onto the hard stone floor of the temple. The physical assault was severe enough to tear his clothing and break the sacred prayer beads he wore around his neck. Apart from the physical injuries sustained during the thrashing, the elderly victim has experienced severe psychological trauma due to the public humiliation and desecration of his religious attire inside the temple.
Social Media Outrage and Police Investigation
The entire sequence of events was documented by the CCTV surveillance system installed inside the temple complex. Several local worshippers who were present in the temple at the time witnessed the high-handedness of the three accused. The footage, which has since been shared widely across social platforms, shows the aggressive behavior of the suspects and has served as crucial evidence for the investigators. The visual proof of the assault has fueled public anger, with community members calling for strict measures against the culprits.
Taking note of the public outrage and the gravity of the physical assault on a senior citizen, the Kardhani police station acted swiftly. Law enforcement officials registered a criminal case against Harish Chaturvedi, Devansh Chaturvedi, and Ritu Chaturvedi. The first information report invokes multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 126(2) for wrongful restraint, and Section 3(5) which pertains to acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention.
The responsibility of leading the detailed investigation has been assigned to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Suresh Kumar. The investigating officer and his team are currently examining the CCTV recordings to verify the sequence of events and identify all active participants. Additionally, the police are recording formal statements from the eyewitnesses who were present in the temple during the incident.
