Sikar has emerged as a major employment generator within Rajasthan's informal economy, surpassing several prominent districts across the state in generating livelihoods. According to a comprehensive district-level study released by the Union Ministry of Statistics, smaller informal establishments in the district have absorbed a substantial volume of the local labour force. Sikar currently houses 1,73,082 unorganised operational enterprises that together employ 3,27,999 workers. This substantial working population places Sikar in the fourth position across Rajasthan in terms of the sheer number of informal sector personnel employed.
Fewer Enterprises but a Larger Working Base Than Bikaner
A comparative assessment between Sikar and Bikaner illustrates a noteworthy structural dynamic in the informal business landscape. While Bikaner records a larger aggregate count of unorganised enterprises, Sikar leads decisively in workforce participation. In Bikaner, 1,80,041 unorganised commercial units are operational, accommodating 3,10,363 workers. In contrast, Sikar sustains 3,27,999 active personnel across its network of informal units, translating to an edge of 17,636 additional workers over Bikaner. This difference highlights higher average workforce absorption per unit among Sikar's local commercial establishments.
Retail, Manufacturing, and Services Fuel Employment
A closer examination of Sikar's local economy demonstrates that livelihood generation is spread across a diverse spectrum of grassroots businesses. The primary contributors absorbing labour include retail trade, small-scale light manufacturing, varied service activities, and neighbourhood commerce. Rather than relying on singular industrial operations, these distributed micro-enterprises form the backbone of everyday trade. The extensive participation of workers in these informal trades confirms that the unorganised sector serves as the cornerstone of domestic economic resilience and income security in the district.
Statewide Standing and District Distribution
Looking at the broader statewide metrics across Rajasthan, the capital district of Jaipur leads the informal segment by a wide margin. Jaipur accommodates 4,84,873 unorganised enterprises that provide livelihoods to 10,15,884 workers. Churu occupies the second spot with 3,18,817 active units engaging 6,31,828 working personnel, followed in overall ranking order by Bikaner and Sikar.
Immediately behind Sikar in workforce scale is Udaipur, which accounts for 1,54,460 enterprises supporting 3,06,916 workers. Further down the list, Jaipur Rural records 1,34,320 operational establishments with 2,56,782 employed individuals, while Kota accounts for 1,54,325 units providing employment to 2,52,930 workers.
External Worker Participation and Female Enterprise Ownership
The statistical compilation also sheds light on the geographic mobility of labour, mapping the presence of workers originating from outside the respective districts. In Neem Ka Thana, enterprises employing outside workers constituted a significant 24 percent share. Jaipur followed closely with a 20.71 percent share of such establishments, while Jodhpur registered 20.01 percent and Kota recorded 12.93 percent, indicating that regional micro-economies draw substantial immigrant labour alongside indigenous residents.
On the entrepreneurship front, proprietary enterprises owned and operated by women saw the highest statewide representation in Jhunjhunu, where female-owned ventures stood at 37.11 percent. By comparison, female ownership in Jaipur stood at 24.87 percent. Taken together, the findings demonstrate that Sikar and its neighbouring Shekhawati belt are expanding far beyond basic enterprise registration numbers, functioning as vital engines of actual employment and regional economic balance.
