Deep within the historic textile hub of Rajanna Sircilla in Telangana, a humble handloom weaver has achieved national acclaim by merging ancient craft with modern milestones. Veldi Hariprasad, an artisan of extraordinary caliber, has captured the attention of the nation's highest leadership through his unparalleled mastery over thread and loom, proving that traditional skills can stand tall against modern mechanized factories.
Crafting the G20 Emblem by Hand
During India's G20 presidency in the years 2022-23, Hariprasad sought to immortalize this national achievement through his own artistic medium. Operating entirely without any modern machinery, he undertook the painstaking task of weaving the official G20 India 2023 logo onto a single piece of fabric. This intricate process demanded absolute precision, immense patience, and hours of continuous labor, as even a minor mistake could ruin the entire textile piece. Once finished, this masterpiece was sent as a gift to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Recognition on a National Stage
The weaver's dedicated craftsmanship did not go unnoticed. In the 95th episode of his monthly radio address, 'Mann Ki Baat', Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Hariprasad's exceptional talent. The Prime Minister emphasized that such a unique gift from a remote corner of the country serves as a testament to the strength of India's self-reliant art and its rich heritage of traditional weaving. This national spotlight brought Sircilla's weaving community into the limelight, showcasing the viability of hand-woven art.
The Saree That Fits in a Matchbox
Hariprasad's creative genius extends far beyond the G20 logo. The master weaver has gained fame for creating a silk saree so incredibly fine that it can be folded and placed inside a standard cardboard matchbox. This miraculous piece of textile can even be threaded through the tiny eye of a sewing needle, illustrating the extreme precision of his weaving techniques. Additionally, his devotion and skill found expression in a sacred project for the Ayodhya Ram Temple, where he crafted a magnificent golden saree for Goddess Sita, using real gold threads to complete the divine garment.
Elevating Traditional Craft to the World Stage
The remarkable achievements of Sircilla's artisans, exemplified by Veldi Hariprasad, show how passion and dedication can elevate regional crafts to the global arena. These handloom weavers are not just earning livelihoods; they are preserving an ancient heritage and bringing pride to Telangana and the entire nation. Their ongoing success serves as an inspiration for the younger generation to embrace and sustain these age-old artistic traditions.
