A deep wave of shock and grief has engulfed the village of Kakrana in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan following the tragic deaths of Indian Navy sailor Puranmal Mehra, his wife, and their two young children inside a high-security naval residential area in Colaba, Mumbai. The bodies of all four family members were brought to their ancestral village on Monday, where they were given a tearful and emotional farewell by grieving relatives and locals.
Mumbai police authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Officials stated that the exact cause of death will be definitively established only after the post-mortem and forensic examination reports are officially released. Investigators noted that no suicide note was recovered from the scene. The police are exploring all possible angles, including domestic discord, mental stress, and other potential factors, while keeping both murder and suicide under active consideration.
Concerns Rose After Three Days of Unanswered Calls
The tragedy came to light when the sailor's relatives tried repeatedly to get in touch with him. Puranmal's younger brother, Mukesh Kumar, explained that family members had been calling him for three consecutive days, but there was no response. As the phone remained unanswered, growing anxiety prompted the family to inform naval authorities on Saturday. Around 11 pm on Saturday night, the family finally received the devastating news of Puranmal's death from Mumbai.
Joined the Navy in 2015
According to family members, Puranmal Mehra enrolled in the Indian Navy from Jodhpur in the year 2015. In 2020, he married Oma Mehra, a resident of Khandela in the Sikar district. He had visited his village Kakrana about nine months ago while on leave and had spoken to his family over the phone roughly six days before the incident occurred.
Villagers remembered Puranmal as a friendly and helpful individual. A neighbor named Jitendra stated that Puranmal held no animosity or disputes with anyone. Puranmal was the second among three brothers. His elder brother, Brijlal Mehra, also serves in the armed forces, whereas his younger brother, Mukesh Kumar, lives in the village. Their father, Shambhudayal, runs a grocery store in Kakrana to support the family.
Bodies Brought to Village in a Military Truck
The mortal remains of all four individuals were transported from the Gudhagaudji police station to Kakrana in an army truck. As the bodies arrived, the atmosphere in the village turned sombre and heavy. The sailor's funeral procession was led using a military vehicle, while his wife's bier was carried on the shoulders of relatives and villagers. Family members and local residents also carried the bodies of the two young children to the cremation ground.
At the cremation site, Puranmal Mehra was accorded a guard of honour. Army personnel handed over the tricolor flag to his father, Shambhudayal, while his younger brother, Mukesh Kumar, performed the final rites. The simultaneous departure of a dedicated service member and the loss of an entire family left the entire community of Kakrana stunned and mourning.
