In a striking demonstration of student activism, around 50 schoolgirls residing at a government tribal girls hostel in Sirohi, Rajasthan, marched on foot to the District Collectorate to draw attention to deteriorating living conditions and unhygienic meals. This incident highlights a growing wave among Gen Alpha and Gen Z students who are increasingly raising their voices to demand adequate educational and residential facilities. After repeated complaints to the hostel authorities yielded no improvement, the young residents decided to directly approach the highest administrative official in the district.
Allegations of Warden Misbehavior and Foul Meal Quality
According to the protesting students, the standard of food and basic cleanliness in their hostel had been unsatisfactory for a prolonged period. The hostellers alleged that insects were frequently found in the food served to them, posing a serious threat to their health and well-being. Furthermore, when they attempted to bring these pressing health concerns to the attention of the hostel warden, their grievances were met with outright disrespect rather than corrective measures. The girls revealed that the warden acted rudely and attempted to socially belittle them whenever issues were raised. Faced with continuous administrative neglect and mistreatment, the students ultimately ran out of patience and took to the streets.
Prompt Action by District Collector and Joint Inquiry Setup
Upon learning about the arrival of the protesting schoolgirls at the Collectorate premises, Sirohi District Collector Rohitashwa Singh Tomar acted swiftly. He invited the students into his official chamber and spent a full hour patiently listening to every single detail of their grievances. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Collector took immediate administrative measures to address the concerns.
District Collector Tomar summoned key administrative officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), the Tehsildar, and the Additional District Project Coordinator of the Education Department. He constituted a joint inquiry committee comprising these officials to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the hostel's state of affairs. He personally assured the girls that stringent disciplinary action would be initiated against anyone found guilty once the inquiry committee submits its findings.
District-Wide Hostel Inspections Ordered and Transport Arranged
Extending the scope of intervention beyond the individual institution, District Collector Rohitashwa Singh Tomar mandated a comprehensive inspection of all government hostels across Sirohi district. He instructed officials to compile data regarding food quality in mess facilities, availability of clean drinking water, overall sanitation standards, and the conduct of wardens in every residential facility across the district.
Reassuring the students, Collector Tomar emphasized that no compromise would be made regarding the health, dignity, and safety of hostellers. To ensure their safe return after the prolonged protest, the administration arranged four official government vehicles to transport all 50 girls back to their hostel premises. The prompt response has given the students hope that the upcoming investigation report will result in long-overdue systemic reforms and nutritious food in their hostel.
