The Indian Air Force is preparing to host a major multi-nation military exercise named Tarang Shakti in Jodhpur next month, drawing attention from defense experts worldwide. While several nations are slated to participate, the primary highlight of the event is the potential deployment of a small contingent of United States F-35 aircraft. Should this deployment materialize, it will mark the historic first time that the F-35 participates in a military drill on Indian soil. Previously, the advanced jet was only showcased in India during an air show in Bengaluru, making its upcoming presence in an operational training environment a significant milestone.
A Peak Modern Stealth Asset
The F-35 is widely recognized globally as one of the most sophisticated fighter aircraft in existence. Equipped with advanced stealth capabilities, it is designed to evade conventional radar systems with exceptional efficiency. This characteristic gives it a distinct tactical advantage in modern aerial warfare. Integrating such a high-end platform alongside other participating aircraft in Jodhpur will provide a unique operational experience for the Indian military, fostering closer technical and tactical understanding between the allied air arms.
Global Participation at Jodhpur
The multinational scope of Tarang Shakti extends far beyond a bilateral engagement. Alongside the United States, air forces from Australia, France, the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Greece, Singapore, and Sri Lanka are scheduled to take part in the drills. Furthermore, defense officials representing approximately 18 countries are expected to attend the event in an observer capacity. India initially extended invitations to a total of 51 nations, though formal confirmations from all invited parties are still being finalized.
Indian Air Force Assets on Display
Following operations conducted against Pakistani airbases under Operation Sindoor in May, Tarang Shakti is set to become the largest multi-nation air exercise hosted on domestic grounds. The Indian Air Force will deploy a diverse array of homegrown and indigenous platforms, potentially including Tejas fighters, Light Combat Helicopters, and Advanced Light Helicopters. The agenda for the exercise extends well beyond standard flight maneuvers, incorporating ground training modules, maintenance protocols, and extensive technical data sharing among participating personnel.
Building on Prior International Collaboration
The prospect of operating alongside the F-35 follows previous joint engagements, such as the Exercise Pitch Black hosted in Australia, where both the Indian Air Force and the American stealth jets operated within the same theater. The upcoming drills in Jodhpur will offer another substantial opportunity for both air forces to refine their collaborative tactics in a controlled operational setting, reinforcing defense ties between the participating nations.
Expanding the Scale of Tarang Shakti
The inaugural edition of Tarang Shakti took place in 2024, structured across two distinct phases that collectively featured roughly 150 aircraft. That initial iteration saw 11 nations dispatch active flying assets, alongside numerous others participating strictly as observers. The anticipated arrival of the F-35 fleet for the current iteration significantly elevates the profile of the event, cementing its status as a premier multinational aviation exercise in the region.
