The land of Nagaur in Rajasthan is home to numerous historical and religious sites steeped in ancient legends and local traditions. Situated near Merta town, the village of Pandukhan houses the ancient Shri Kunti Mata temple, an architectural and spiritual heritage site also locally referred to as Pandava Oran. Archaeological estimates and traditional beliefs indicate that this temple complex is roughly 1500 years old. Local folklore connects the site to the Mahabharata era, holding that the Pandavas spent time here performing intense penance during their period of exile. Right in front of the temple structure lies a large ancient stepwell, known as a baori, which tradition attributes to the Pandavas. Whenever the adjacent village pond dries up during dry seasons, the stepwell emerges in its full historic design.
Historical Inscriptions and Rare Discoveries from the Stepwell
According to the temple priest Kuntidas, the premises contain several artifacts that testify to its long historical continuum. At the main entrance, two ancient stone lion statues stand guard before the deity; one statue has a damaged head, while the other features a broken leg. Inscriptions written in an ancient script are preserved across various points of the temple grounds. Around eight years ago, maintenance work and receding water levels in the stepwell led to the recovery of a rare stone relic dating back to 1260 AD. Additionally, a bucket made of an unidentified special metal was drawn from the stepwell, notable for remaining completely rust free despite spending centuries submerged in water.
Sanctum Sanctorum Layout and the Naming of Pandukhan
The sanctum sanctorum of the Shri Kunti Mata temple features three primary deities placed for veneration. The central position is occupied by Mahishasuramardini Mata. To her left stands the idol of Mata Kunti, while to her right resides a marble statue of Durga Mata seated upon a lion. Near the idol of Ganesha on the left side of the inner sanctum, another historical stone inscription is carefully preserved. According to local elders, the historical presence of the Pandavas and the growing spiritual renown of the Kunti Mata shrine eventually led to the village being named Pandukhan.
Brahma Muhurta Aarti and Ashtami Fair Celebrations
A defining characteristic of this ancient shrine is its unbroken ritual tradition. Every morning during Brahma Muhurta at 4 AM, the priest conducts the first aarti of the day. This schedule has been maintained across generations, mirroring the worship practices of ancestral priest lineages. The temple doors close for the night at 9 PM. On special religious occasions, traditional Rajasthani dishes such as Lapsi and Dal-Baati are offered as bhog to the deity. During Shardiya Navratri, particularly on Ashtami, the temple grounds host a large annual fair that attracts pilgrims from surrounding regions.
Regional Faith and Kuldevi Worship
Although the 1500-year-old site has not yet been prominently featured on the state's commercial tourism map, it holds deep religious significance for regional communities. Devotees travel from Nagaur, Rajsamand, and other districts across Rajasthan, as well as neighboring states, to worship Shri Kunti Mata as their ancestral deity, or Kuldevi. Blending historical inscriptions, unexplained artifacts, and exile-era legends, the shrine continues to preserve its distinct cultural heritage.
