In Ujjain's Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, the Bhasma Aarti held in the Brahma Muhurat hours of Tuesday, 21 July 2026, brought devotees their first glimpse of Lord Mahakal for the day. As the temple doors opened, priests began by formally worshipping every deity's idol installed in the sanctum before turning to the jalabhishek of Shri Mahakal.
From milk and curd to the panchamrit ritual
Following the water offering, priests performed puja with panchamrit prepared from milk, curd, desi ghee, sugar and fruit juices. The very first ghantal was rung as Hari Om jal was offered, setting the ritual in motion. Priests then went on to worship Mata Parvati, Lord Ganesh and Kartikeya, and offered sweets and fruits as bhog to Mahakal. After the kapoor aarti, naivedya was offered to Baba, and the Bhasma Aarti followed, during which sacred bhasma was applied to Shri Mahakaleshwar.
Silver ornaments, rudraksha and fragrant garlands
During the puja, Lord Mahakal was adorned with a silver Om, bilvapatra, a crown and a rudraksha mala. A tripund and trishul were drawn on Baba's forehead, along with a damru, a silver crown shaped like Sheshnag, a silver mundmala and another rudraksha mala. A special garland woven from fragrant flowers was also offered, filling the sanctum with a divine glow.
Devotees believe Mahakal turns from formless to manifest
It is believed that after the Bhasma Aarti, Shri Mahakal reveals himself to devotees in a manifest form, having appeared formless before. This belief is why large numbers of devotees throng the temple every Tuesday, and especially during the Bhasma Aarti. The temple premises echoed with chants hailing Baba Mahakal as devotees prayed for prosperity and wellbeing for themselves and their families.
Glowing diyas and devotees' experience
For today's Bhasma Aarti, Shri Mahakaleshwar was dressed in striking new garments and jewellery. The glow of the diyas and the melodic ringing of temple bells lent the entire atmosphere a divine feel. Devotees who attended said even a glimpse of the Bhasma Aarti brings deep peace of mind and fills life with positive energy, with several calling it the most sacred experience of their lives. The temple administration also made special security and crowd management arrangements so that every devotee could have a comfortable darshan of Baba Mahakal. Once again, today's Bhasma Aarti became a rare confluence of devotion, reverence and faith.
