The city of Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh has dissolved into a sea of saffron as the holy month of Sawan reaches its peak. Thousands of devotees carrying sacred Ganga water from Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Gangotri are passing through the region on their way to their home destinations. On National Highway 58, the arrival of Dak Kanwar processions has energized the atmosphere, drawing local residents to the roadsides to catch a glimpse of the spirited pilgrimage. Saffron flags, devotional music, and chants of Lord Shiva resonate continuously along the transit corridor.
Unwavering Faith Beyond Daily Work Routine
The dedication of the pilgrims walking along the highway reflects an extraordinary commitment to tradition. Many devotees share that after working demanding jobs throughout the year, they set aside time as Sawan approaches to travel to holy sites like Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Gangotri. After collecting holy river water, they undertake the return journey entirely on foot to perform ritual water offerings at their local Shiva temples. Despite covering hundreds of kilometers in challenging weather, pilgrims report feeling energized rather than exhausted, attributing their endurance to deep spiritual resolve.
Vibrant Floats and Musical Processions on NH 58
National Highway 58 has turned into a spectacle of color and sound with the entrance of Dak Kanwar groups. Mounted on large vehicles with high-powered sound systems, young devotees dance to devotional tracks while maintaining a swift pace. The processions feature elaborate artistic tableaux depicting various forms of Lord Shiva, including his posture atop Nandi, his fierce Mahakal persona, and detailed miniature replicas of the Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines. Other floats celebrate forms of Aadishakti, Goddess Kali, Lord Jagannath, and Laddu Gopal, showcasing rich craftsmanship that draws praise from onlookers.
