During the holy month of Sawan, a massive surge of devotees is being witnessed at the Dhareshwar Mahadev Temple, situated on the banks of the Narmada River in Khegaon, located within the Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh. This ancient shrine is renowned for housing a rare form of Lord Shiva known as Nateshwar, which represents the deity's sacred Ardhanarishwar manifestation. Throughout the entire month of Sawan, and particularly on Sawan Mondays, crowds of worshippers gather from early morning until late at night to perform rituals and offer prayers.
The Penance of Daruk and a 5000 Year Old Mythological Legacy
The heritage of Dhareshwar Mahadev Temple spans approximately 5000 years according to long held traditions. Mythological accounts state that Daruk, who served as the charioteer to Lord Krishna, was destined to take birth on Earth due to a curse placed upon him by Goddess Parvati. After taking birth in the mortal world, Daruk left his household at a young age and set out on the sacred Narmada Parikrama pilgrimage.
Upon completing his circumambulation of the river, Daruk arrived in Khegaon and initiated intense penance on the riverbank to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Pleased with his unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him in the divine Nateshwar form. Moved by the sight, Daruk requested the deity to reside permanently at that exact spot in the very same manifestation so that future generations of devotees could continue to behold his divine form. Granting his earnest prayer, Lord Shiva established himself there permanently. Due to this sacred event involving Daruk, the pilgrimage center is also widely referred to as Darukesheshwar.
Devotees Arrive From Four States with Narmada Holy Water
With the arrival of the Sawan season, religious activities at the temple reach a peak. Devotees travel not only from various parts of Madhya Pradesh but also in large numbers from neighboring states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan to pay homage to the deity.
The atmosphere becomes particularly vibrant on every Sawan Monday. Kanwariyas undertake long journeys carrying holy water from the Narmada River to perform ritualistic abhishek over the Nateshwar idol. Pilgrims hold a deep-seated belief that prayers offered at Dhareshwar Mahadev with a sincere heart are unfailingly answered by the deity.
Special Sawan Monday Decorations, Maha Aarti, and Community Feeds
According to Kailash Giri, the temple priest, special adornment ceremonies are conducted for Lord Shiva on every Monday during Sawan. The entire temple premises are lavishly decorated with vibrant flowers, while rituals, recitations, and holy abhishek continue non-stop through the day.
In the evening, a grand Maha Aarti is performed, drawing hundreds of worshippers into collective devotion. Furthermore, to cater to pilgrims arriving from afar, the temple management organizes regular bhandaras where sanctified food meals are distributed to all visiting devotees.
