As the grand festival of Ganesh Chaturthi approaches, festive fervor has begun spreading across the nation. Telangana capital Hyderabad is once again taking center stage with its world famous grand celebrations. At the heart of this devotion is the famous neighborhood of Khairatabad, where artisans are constructing one of the tallest and most breathtaking Ganesha idols in the country. This year, the Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav Samiti has commissioned a massive 69-foot-tall idol featuring the divine Panchamukha Sankashtahara Maha Ganapati avatar, designed to offer devotees a spiritually uplifting experience.
A Spectacular Design Featuring Somnath Jyotirlinga and Maa Kalika
The 69-foot main deity is not the only attraction inside the grand pandal this year. To enrich the religious significance and visual splendor for visiting pilgrims, sculptors are crafting impressive companion idols on both sides of the central statue. On the right side of Ganesha, a detailed 15-foot-tall replica of the holy Somnath Jyotirlinga is being installed. Meanwhile, on the left side, a powerful representation of Maa Kalika will grace the shrine. Together, these side installations create a rare spiritual combination, transforming the venue into an imposing shrine that promises an unforgettable visual and devotional experience for millions of visitors.
100 Percent Eco-Friendly Materials and Master Craftsmanship
In a major push toward environmental protection, the organizers have completely prohibited the use of Plaster of Paris (PoP) and harmful chemical pigments. Renowned sculptor Chinnaswamy Rajendran is leading a dedicated team of 150 skilled artisans who are building the entire structure using eco-friendly materials. The internal core of the giant idol relies on sturdy iron frames and wooden supports, while the outer shaping is done using traditional clay, dry grass, and rice husk. For finishing touches, artisans are using non-toxic, water-soluble organic colors to ensure that the idol dissolves naturally without polluting water sources.
A Historic Legacy Rising From 1 Foot to 69 Feet
The iconic Khairatabad Ganesha celebration dates back to 1954, when freedom fighter S. Shankaraiah initiated the ritual with a modest 1-foot idol to foster community unity. Over the past seven decades, the event has expanded exponentially, evolving into a nationwide symbol of faith that draws lakhs of devotees every single day during the festival. Following 10 days of intense worship and grand rituals, the immersion process will take place on the 11th day at the nearby Hussain Sagar Lake. Massive heavy-duty cranes and elaborate police security arrangements will be deployed to safely submerge the idol. Currently, artisans are working around the clock to add the final artistic touches to this monumental masterpiece.
