The holy city of Ayodhya is currently echoing with chants of Shiv devotion as worshippers gather across its ancient shrines. While prayers and rituals dedicated to Lord Ram continue at various monasteries and temples, devotees are equally immersed in performing water offerings at local Shiv shrines. Among these sacred sites, the Siddhapeeth Shri Nageshwarnath Temple stands out as one of the oldest and most revered Shiv temples in the region. Situated near the banks of the Saryu river, this temple holds a significant place in the spiritual heritage of Ayodhya, with roots tracing back to antiquity.
Treta Yug Origins and Heritage of the Shrine
The Shri Nageshwarnath Temple is deeply woven into the religious fabric of Ayodhya. According to ancient traditions and scriptures, the temple was established during Treta Yug by Maharaj Kush, the son of Lord Ram. Because of this historic connection, the shrine remains a central landmark for pilgrims visiting Ayodhya, representing a timeless tradition of Shiv worship in the sacred city.
The Lost Armlet in the Saryu Waters
A compelling legendary event marks the founding of the Nageshwarnath Temple. As explained by temple priest Prabhakar Chaturvedi, Maharaj Kush once visited Ayodhya and went to bathe in the Saryu river at the Swargdwar area. During his bath, his ornate armlet slipped off and fell into the river current.
The fallen armlet was retrieved from the water by Kumudini, the daughter of the serpent king Nagraj Kumud. Upon learning that his armlet had been taken by the serpent princess, Maharaj Kush was enraged. In his anger, he raised his bow and vowed to release a powerful arrow targeting the Nag princess.
Divine Intervention and the Origin of 'Nageshwarnath'
Fearing for his daughter's life, Nagraj Kumud prayed intensely to Lord Shiv for protection. Touched by his devotee's earnest prayers, Lord Shiv manifested at the scene and requested Maharaj Kush to spare the serpent princess and grant her immunity.
Upon beholding Lord Shiv, the anger of Maharaj Kush dissolved completely. He immediately forgave Kumudini and offered formal worship to Lord Shiv. Maharaj Kush then requested that since the deity had shown compassion toward the serpents, Lord Shiv should forever be worshipped at this location under the name Nageshwarnath. Lord Shiv granted this wish, and the shrine became widely renowned by that name.
Sacred Beliefs, Rituals, and Festival Festivities
Located in the Swargdwar area along the Saryu river bank, the Nageshwarnath Temple remains an enduring center of faith for millions of devotees. It is widely believed that performing rituals such as Jalabhishekar and Rudrabhishekar at this shrine fulfills personal wishes and relieves individuals of life's hardships, ailments, and obstacles.
Inside the sanctum sanctorum, the sacred Shivling is intricately adorned with serpent motifs and is considered spiritually potent and auspicious. Heavy crowds of worshippers gather at the shrine during the holy month of Sawan, Mahashivratri, and other major religious celebrations to seek blessings, reaffirming the temple's role as a cornerstone of Ayodhya's spiritual legacy.
