The month of Shravan is considered the most sacred time to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva, holding immense religious significance according to the Hindu calendar. Temples witness massive crowds of devotees offering water and observing Monday fasts, while ascetics camp near holy rivers to perform severe penance. Amidst all this, newly married women in Bihar's Mithilanchal region observe the Madhushravani fast to pray for their husbands' longevity and a harmonious marital life. This year, the fasting period commenced on August 3 and will run through August 15, lasting for a total of 13 days.
How the Madhushravani Rituals Are Performed
In the Mithilanchal region, families belonging to Brahmin, Karn Kayasth, and Swarnakar communities observe this festival. Newlywed brides perform rigorous worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri for 14 to 15 days during their very first Shravan month after marriage. On the final day of this observance, the brides undergo 'temi', where their knees are briefly exposed to fire in a ritualistic trial by faith. Tradition held that a larger burn wound on the knee signified a longer life for the husband. However, 'sheetal temi' has now become far more common, allowing the ritual to be conducted without actual fire, or simply by holding an oil lamp near the knees and removing it instantly.
Origins and Ritualistic Offerings of the Festival
It is believed that Madhushravani was established in ancient times to help newlywed women ease into their marital lives smoothly. Women wear bridal attire, gather seasonal flowers and leaves, and store them in bamboo baskets while performing daily prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri. Notably, a female priest oversees the entire worship and narrates the traditional stories to the bride. Throughout the observance, every single ritual item used comes from the bride's in-laws, and she consumes only the grains sent from their home. At the conclusion of each day's worship, the newlywed distributes bridal items, particularly raw ground mehendi, to married women.
Worship of Deities and Environmental Significance
During Madhushravani, the brides must worship snake deities, Goddess Gauri, the Sun, the Moon, and the Navagraha. The festival also promotes environmental awareness by incorporating plants like juhi and maini into the rituals to highlight their cultural importance. Another unique feature of Madhushravani is that while stale flowers are generally prohibited in Hindu worship, Goddess Mansa is offered stale flowers instead of fresh ones during this period. The festival starts on the fifth lunar day of the dark fortnight of Shravan and ends on the third lunar day of the bright fortnight.
Rigorous Observances and Mythological Roots
The participating women follow strict austerities, keeping their hair tied from the very first day until the conclusion of the festival. They eat only once a day without salt, sleep on the floor, and perform both morning and evening prayers. Small clay idols of elephants, snakes, and Shiva-Gauri are installed and worshipped inside the kohbar room. According to mythological beliefs, Goddess पार्वती first performed the Madhushravani fast, which blessed her to have Lord Shiva as her husband across births. Newlyweds invoke Lord Shiva, Goddess Gauri, and the serpent lineage to secure long lives for their spouses.
