Massive crowds of devotees gathered at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain to mark the first Monday of the holy month of Sawan. Queue lines began forming as early as Sunday night, leading up to the sacred Bhasma Aarti that commenced at 2:30 AM. Echoes of religious chants filled the complex as thousands of pilgrims availed both general entry and moving darshan facilities to seek blessings.
Adjusted Temple Timings for the Shravan Season
To accommodate the extraordinary rush during the Shravan and Bhadrapada months, temple authorities instituted modified schedules starting 30 July. Under the revised arrangement, temple doors open every morning at 3:00 AM instead of the routine 4:00 AM, with the morning Bhasma Aarti concluding by 5:00 AM. On every Monday of Sawan, the Bhasma Aarti starts at 2:30 AM and runs until 4:30 AM. These temporary timings will remain operational until 7 September, after which the conventional schedule resumes on 8 September.
Streamlined Routes and Wait Times for Pilgrims
The temple management implemented dedicated route plans to maintain smooth crowd flow and minimize inconvenience. General devotees enter through the Triveni Museum route and exit via a tunnel located near the Bada Ganesh Temple. For those opting for quick darshan, Gate Number 1 serves as the designated point of entry. Thanks to these systematic arrangements, general worshippers are completing their visits in roughly 40 minutes, while fast-track entry takes around 10 to 15 minutes. Drinking water stations, ticket counters, and shoe racks have been positioned along the walking corridors.
Regulations and Water Offering Schedule for Kanwar Pilgrims
With large numbers of Kanwar yatris arriving during the festive season, special access channels have been established through Gate Number 1 and the Harsiddhi Square intersection. Kanwar groups are permitted to perform water offerings on four designated days each week: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. To prevent overcrowding, water offerings by Kanwar groups will not be permitted on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Free meal services and prasad distribution points have also been set up along all major arrival highways.
