The traditional Unjal Utsav (swing festival) was celebrated with immense religious fervor and devotion at the famous Melmalayanur Angalamman Temple in Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district on the auspicious occasion of Aadi Amavasya. Lakhs of pilgrims from various districts of Tamil Nadu as well as neighboring states including Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh converged at the shrine to seek the blessings of Goddess Angalamman. Dawn Abhishekam and Golden Armor Adornment
The sacred proceedings for Aadi Amavasya commenced early Wednesday morning around 4 AM with a special Abhishekam and Maha Aradhana performed for the main presiding deity, Goddess Angalamman. Following the ritual bath and prayers, the goddess was decorated in a striking gold armor known as Thanga Kavasam, accompanied by a elaborate Deeparadhana. Devotees began gathering in long queues from the early morning hours, waiting patiently for a glimpse of the deity in her golden attire.
Midnight Swing Ceremony and Devotional Lullabies
The central highlight of the festival, the Unjal Utsav, took place late in the evening. Around 11 PM, the ceremonial deity was taken out from the northern entrance of the temple amidst the traditional beating of drums and brought to the Unjal Mandapam. Decked in a special Alankaram, Goddess Angalamman was placed on the swing. Temple priests along with thousands of assembled devotees sang sacred Amman lullabies and devotional hymns to worship the deity. The grand ceremony culminated around midnight with a Maha Deeparadhana as chants of 'Goddess Angalamman' echoed throughout the premises.
Ministerial Participation and Event Management
Tamil Nadu Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources N. Anand also attended the festivities at the Angalamman Temple on Aadi Amavasya. He joined the crowds of devotees, offered prayers, and assisted in gently swinging the sacred cradle. Large numbers of pilgrims traveled from Puducherry, Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Cuddalore, and Kallakurichi to attend the event. To accommodate the massive influx, transport authorities operated special bus services from multiple cities. The overall arrangements were handled jointly by officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department and the Temple Trustee Committee.
