A massive wave of devotees flooded the holy town of Chitrakoot on the sacred occasion of Sawan Hariyali Amavasya. Devotees began arriving at the revered pilgrimage site associated with Lord Ram shortly after midnight at 12 AM from various parts of the country. By early morning, dense crowds covered the banks of the Mandakini River, particularly at Ramghat, as well as the entire Kamadgiri parikrama route. Pilgrims took holy dips in the sacred waters of the Mandakini River before offering prayers to Lord Kamtanath and Lord Shiv, praying for peace, prosperity, and good fortune for their families.

While Amavasya is celebrated every month with great devotion in Chitrakoot, the Hariyali Amavasya falling during the holy month of Sawan holds extraordinary spiritual significance for devotees. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel from across India to reach this holy destination on this day. The gathering features a remarkably large representation from rural areas and farming communities, who travel long distances to participate in the traditional rituals.
After taking a holy bath in the Mandakini River during the early hours, devotees head to the temple of Lord Mattagajendranath Shiv, revered as the king of Chitrakoot, to perform the ritual water offering (jalabhishekh). Following this, pilgrims seek blessings at the Lord Kamtanath temple and undertake the seven-kilometer circumambulation (parikrama) around the holy Kamadgiri hill. Vibrant chants and religious fervor echo along the entire parikrama path throughout the festival day.

According to Vedic traditions and religious beliefs, the entire month of Sawan is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiv. It is widely believed that performing rituals, prayers, acts of charity, and holy baths in the sacred land of Chitrakoot on this day confers immense spiritual merit upon the devotee.
Farmers in particular flock to Chitrakoot with prayers for adequate monsoon rainfall, rich crop yields, and family welfare. Local beliefs also connect the day to the Ramayana tradition, holding that Lord Ram himself took a bath in the Mandakini River at Chitrakoot on an Amavasya day during his period of exile. This deep-rooted belief attracts exceptionally large crowds of worshippers to the holy site every year on Hariyali Amavasya.
Devotee Experiences and Observations from Local Priests
Expressing his devotion, Vishambhar Prasad, a pilgrim who travelled from the Banda district of Uttar Pradesh with his family, shared that he tries to visit Chitrakoot on almost every Amavasya. He mentioned that after performing the ritual bath in the Mandakini River at Ramghat, his family would visit the Lord Kamtanath temple and complete the Kamadgiri parikrama. Vishambhar Prasad said, "Visiting Lord Kamtanath and performing the parikrama brings deep mental peace and prosperity to the family."
Sharing details about the event, Rajaram, a priest stationed at Ramghat, noted that lakhs of devotees arrived in Chitrakoot on Hariyali Amavasya. He observed that from early morning, worshippers were taking sacred dips in the river, performing jalabhishekh for Lord Shiv, offering charitable donations, and completing the Kamadgiri parikrama with immense devotion.
Administrative Measures and Security Deployment for Crowd Control
To handle the large gathering of pilgrims on Hariyali Amavasya, the local administration and police department put comprehensive security arrangements into place. Personnel from the police force have been deployed across key locations, including Ramghat, various bathing steps along the Mandakini River, and the Kamadgiri parikrama route, to manage crowd movement effectively.
Authorities are monitoring the venue to ensure orderly queues and prevent overcrowding at sensitive points along the riverbanks and temple premises. Safety barricades, emergency medical units, and relief staff have been stationed to ensure that visiting pilgrims can perform their religious rituals, darshan, and circumambulation safely and without disruption.
