The auspicious Hindu month of Sawan officially commenced on July 30, marking a period deeply dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. Millions of devotees across India engage in special prayers, fasts, and temple pilgrimages throughout this sacred timeframe. At the renowned Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple located in Varanasi, worshippers will have the unique opportunity to witness Lord Shiva in four magnificent and distinct forms across the four Mondays of Sawan. Additionally, the festival will conclude with a divine swing adornment on Sawan Purnima.
First Sawan Monday: The Shankar Swaroop
The first Monday of the Sawan month falls on August 10. On this occasion, Lord Vishwanath will be decorated in the revered Shankar Swaroop. According to the arrangements, a temporary idol will be installed inside the sanctum sanctorum specifically for this day and beautifully adorned with fresh flowers. Devotees will be allowed to view this floral decoration immediately following the conclusion of the solemn Saptarishi Aarti ritual.
Second Sawan Monday: The Gauri Shankar Swaroop
On the second Monday of Sawan, also observed on August 10, pilgrims will get to witness the divine Gauri Shankar Swaroop of Lord Vishwanath. This particular appearance holds immense spiritual significance as it represents Lord Shiva alongside Goddess Parvati. The entire Gauri Shankar decoration process will be completed prior to opening the doors for general public viewing, giving devotees a rare glimpse of divine togetherness.
Third Sawan Monday: The Ardhanarishvara Swaroop
The third Monday of Sawan is set for August 17, 2026. On this day, the temple priests will perform the elaborate adornment of Lord Shiva in the Ardhanarishvara form. This sacred manifestation symbolizes the complete unification of Shiva and Parvati as well as cosmic balance throughout the universe. Devotees believe that offering prayers before this form during Sawan helps fulfill heartfelt desires.
Fourth Sawan Monday: The Grand Rudraksha Swaroop
The fourth and final Monday of Sawan takes place on August 24. For this concluding Monday, Baba Vishwanath will be adorned using 500,000 (5 lakh) Rudraksha beads, earning this presentation the title of Rudraksha Swaroop. Following the completion of the evening prayers and rituals, all 500,000 Rudraksha beads used in the decoration will be distributed among attending devotees as blessed prasad.
Sawan Purnima: Divine Family Swing Darshan
The Sawan Purnima date falls on August 27 and August 28, marking the culmination of the holy month. On this grand occasion, Baba Vishwanath will offer divine darshan in a specially crafted swing setup (Jhula Shringar). Lord Shiva will be depicted alongside his entire divine family, providing a memorable spiritual experience for pilgrims visiting Varanasi.
