In Chhattisgarh's Kanker district, the village of Tudge in Durgukondal block witnessed a significant social and religious gathering on Sunday, July 19, 2026, as 17 members from three families gave up Christianity and returned to their original faith.
A homecoming marked by ritual and tradition
The village turned out in large numbers for the occasion, which was conducted strictly according to local customs. The community's gayta, patel and other senior figures were present, along with a sizeable crowd of villagers and elected representatives who witnessed the moment. Each of the 17 returning members was welcomed with formal worship of local deities. Elders from the community played a central role throughout the ceremony, applying tilak on the foreheads of those who had returned and honoring them with garlands. District panchayat member and chairperson Devendra Tekam also attended the event and addressed the gathering after welcoming the returning families. "Staying connected to our culture, traditions and social values is essential for the community's strength," Tekam said. He added that a community can only progress if it stays rooted in its origins. He appealed to villagers to follow the community's established norms and rules, and to live together with brotherhood, love and harmony. Tekam placed particular emphasis on preserving social unity and safeguarding cultural identity.

The gathering also touched on how the community's customs and culture could be passed on to future generations.
