In the Mithilanchal region of North Bihar, including Darbhanga, the Madhushravani festival is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm. This festival is considered one of the most special and significant occasions for newlywed women. During this period, the fasting women have to follow several strict rules and arduous penances.
Sleeping on the Floor and Abstaining from Maternal Food
Under this unique tradition, newlyweds do not use a bed or cot for a full 10 days, choosing to sleep directly on the floor instead. Furthermore, even though the girls observe this festival while staying at their maternal homes, they do not consume a single grain of food from their parental household.
Complete Arrangements by the In-Laws
Throughout these 10 days, all essential items related to the daily diet and worship materials for the newlywed are supplied entirely by the in-laws' side. This is a vital characteristic of the festival. The young bride rests on the ground and partakes only in the provisions sent by her husband's family.
The Tradition of Applying Vermilion Three Times
Generally, people believe that applying vermilion once during a wedding completes the marital bond. However, in Mithilanchal, there is a tradition of applying vermilion not once or twice, but a total of three times, after which the marriage is deemed complete. The first time vermilion is offered on the wedding night, the second time on the fourth day, and the third time during this Madhushravani fast. Only then is married life considered successful and auspicious.
