Stepping onto the Asuran-Pipraich Road in Gorakhpur, the chaotic noise of city traffic gradually fades into a soothing atmosphere of spirituality. From A Private Orchard To A Renowned Shrine
The site where Gita Vatika now stands was originally a private orchard owned by Seth Tarachand Ghanshyam Das, a businessman based in Kolkata. In those early days, local residents referred to the area as 'Goyandka Garden.' According to accounts shared by Hari Krishna Dujari, a close follower and disciple of saint Bhaiji Hanuman Prasad Poddar, the plot was officially acquired on May 30, 1934, specifically for Bhaiji. A simple residence was constructed on the property the following year in 1935. By 1945, Bhaiji had installed sacred idols of Radharani, Kirtida Maiya, and Lalitaji in the lower section of his home, establishing a foundational center for Radha-Krishna devotion.
The Sacred Vow Of Continuous Chanting
The year 1968 marked a decisive turning point in the history of Gita Vatika. Three years earlier, in 1965, the tradition of Giriraj Ji parikrama had been introduced on the grounds. Then, on the holy occasion of Radhashtami in 1968, Bhaiji Hanuman Prasad Poddar formally initiated the vow of 'Akhand Hari Nam Sankirtan.' Despite changing times and shifting generations, this spiritual chant has remained uninterrupted ever since. Following Bhaiji's passing in 1971, questions arose regarding the continuity of the mission. However, his wife, Ramdei Poddar, took charge of upholding the sacred promise. In 1975, she laid the foundation for the Sri Radhakrishna Sadhana Mandir, which was officially completed in June 1985 after a decade of dedicated work.
Architectural Grandeur With 16 Sanctums And 35 Spires
Beyond its spiritual significance, Gita Vatika is celebrated for its impressive architectural layout. The temple features a central spire reaching a height of approximately 85 feet, surrounded by 35 smaller and larger spires. Inside the expansive complex, visitors find 16 distinct sanctum sanctorums housing a wide array of deities. Alongside the principal idols of Shri Radha-Krishna, devotees can offer prayers to Shiv-Parvati, Sitaram, Goddess Durga, Lord Ganesha, Hanuman Ji, and Surya Dev. Furthermore, the interior walls are adorned with intricate relief carvings depicting profound scenes and teachings from the Vedas, Upanishads, Ramayana, and Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.
