The sacred land of Rajasthan is globally renowned for its historic heritage, the valor of its warriors, and its vibrant folk culture. It has also been the cradle of a rich saintly tradition that has transcended temporal and geographical boundaries to spread its spiritual essence across the country. A prominent shining star of this spiritual legacy is the Niranjani sect, which originated nearly five centuries ago in Didwana, located in the Nagaur district. Today, this sect has expanded far beyond the borders of Rajasthan, establishing a strong presence in more than ten states across India, including Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, where it continues to propagate its traditions of meditation, renunciation, and pure devotion. Currently, the main seat of this sect is occupied and managed by Saint Sanwardas Maharaj, who is carrying forward this ancient lineage.
From Dacoit Harisingh to Swami Haridas: A Divine Transformation
The foundation story of the Niranjani sect is deeply fascinating and inspiring. The founder of this order, Swami Haridas Maharaj, was known as Harisingh in his early years. Folklore and regional legends frequently refer to him as a dacoit during his early life. However, a major turning point occurred when he came under the spiritual guidance of Guru Gorakhnath. This association dispelled his inner darkness and completely revolutionized his life's trajectory. Abandoning all worldly attachments and material pleasures, he embraced a path of rigorous penance, intense yoga, and deep self-reflection. Upon attaining spiritual realization through these arduous efforts, he founded the Niranjani sect, which centers on the worship of the formless Supreme Being (Nirakar Brahma). The core message of this sect is to worship the formless divine while staying away from empty rituals and ostentation.
Birth in a Sankhla Rajput Family and the Path of Public Welfare
According to historians and the records of the sect, Swami Haridas Maharaj was born in Vikram Samvat 1512 in Kaprod, a small village situated about five kilometers from Didwana. He was born into a Sankhla Rajput family. After achieving enlightenment, he dedicated his entire life to the welfare of humanity, social reform, spiritual practices, and spreading the message of divine love. By teaching people to connect directly with the divine without relying on superficial dogmas, he attracted followers from all walks of life, allowing the sect to expand rapidly over the centuries.
Gadhadham Dayal Bagichi and the Grand Gudri Mela
Swami Haridas Maharaj guided society for many decades before taking Samadhi at the age of 88 on Phalgun Shukla Shasthi in Vikram Samvat 1600. Today, his sacred Samadhi site is famous as Gadhadham Dayal Bagichi, revered as the ultimate pilgrimage center for the followers of the Niranjani sect. Every year, on the occasion of Phalgun Shukla Ekadashi, the grand 'Gudri Mela' is organized at Gadhadham Dayal Bagichi, which serves as the largest religious festival of this community. Sages, holy men, and thousands of devotees from all over India converge in Didwana for this event. During the multi-day fair, the atmosphere is filled with the continuous chanting of Ramnam, devotional singing, spiritual discourses, and satsang. Devotees visit the Samadhi to offer prayers, seek blessings, and express their deep-seated faith in the guru tradition. Even after five hundred years, this divine lineage remains fully active and vibrant, ensuring that Didwana's spiritual heritage continues to shine brightly.
