A Lost Bag, a Vow, and a Royal Wedding
The story of how Maa Kuteti Devi came to reside in Uttarkashi begins with a Maharaja from Kota, Rajasthan, who set out on a pilgrimage to Gangotri. Somewhere along the way, a bag containing his money went missing. Distressed and seeking divine help, he went to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi and made a solemn vow: if his bag were found, he would marry his daughter to a local young man from the region. The bag was recovered, and the Maharaja honoured his promise without hesitation, giving his daughter's hand in marriage to a youth from Uttarkashi.
A Princess's Grief and a Goddess's Promise
The princess settled into her new life in Uttarkashi, but a quiet sorrow lingered within her. Her Kuldevi, Maa Kuteti Devi, was back in Rajasthan, and the distance felt immense. Then, in what is described as a divine act of compassion, the goddess appeared to the princess in a dream and told her that she would be found in her field. The following morning, the princess went to her field near the Indravati River and discovered three stones exactly as the goddess had described in the dream. The villagers recognised it as a miracle and built the Maa Kuteti Devi Temple on that very spot.
A Living Centre of Faith
That humble site has since grown into one of the most prominent places of worship in the Uttarkashi region. The combination of its natural surroundings, the proximity of the Indravati River, and the palpable spiritual atmosphere of the temple creates an experience that devotees say is unlike any other. Local residents and pilgrims from distant places alike continue to visit, keeping the faith surrounding Maa Kuteti Devi very much alive.
