Legendary Shooter Jaspal Rana Dies at 49, Leaving His Own Biopic Unfinished

Jaspal Rana, winner of 15 Commonwealth Games medals and coach to Manu Bhaker, has died of a heart attack at 49. Roy Kapur Films was making a biopic on his life, and he was personally helping finalise its script.

An entire chapter of Indian shooting has come to a close. Jaspal Rana — a celebrated marksman who later shaped a new generation of shooters as a coach — has passed away at the age of just 49. His sudden death from a heart attack has shaken not only the sporting fraternity but everyone who watched his journey on the range and as a mentor.

Health Failed Right After His Final Trip

Rana had recently competed at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany, and was on his way back home. It was during this return that his condition deteriorated abruptly, and he breathed his last at a hospital in Delhi. The moment the news broke, a wave of grief swept across both the sporting world and political circles. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several prominent figures, paid heartfelt tributes to him.

His Life Story Was Headed to the Big Screen

One of the most poignant revelations came from the film industry. ‘Roy Kapur Films’, the production company of well-known producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, expressed deep sorrow on social media and shared an important detail. The banner — known for bringing the stories of real-life heroes to cinema — disclosed that it was developing a biopic based on Rana’s life and his struggles. Strikingly, Rana himself had been working hand in hand with the makers to finalise the film’s script. But fate had other plans, and he left the world before the story could be completed.

In its tribute, the production house wrote, ‘We are deeply shocked by the passing of Jaspal Rana, an architect of India’s sporting excellence. Beyond the medals, his true home lies in the futures of the countless young athletes he shaped. While working with him on the script of this film, we were profoundly moved by his dedication to the sport. But beyond all of that, we will always remember his quick wit, his dry sense of humour and his playful spirit that breathed life into every room. He made us laugh in every situation with his stories and jokes.’

The ‘Dronacharya’ Behind Manu Bhaker

Rana’s identity was never limited to being an outstanding shooter. He was a mentor who transformed the careers of many athletes. In recent years he had been serving as the high-performance coach for India’s pistol shooters. The credit for introducing a tough, disciplined training regimen into Indian shooting belongs to him. It was the result of this very discipline that, under his guidance, Manu Bhaker created history by winning two medals at the Paris Olympics.

A Glittering Playing Career of His Own

As a competitor, his own record was peerless. He represented India at four Commonwealth Games between 1994 and 2006, winning a total of 15 medals — comprising 9 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze. That is why he is regarded as India’s most successful Commonwealth Games athlete. Alongside this, he also added 8 medals to the country’s tally at the Asian Games. In recognition of his contribution to the sport and to coaching, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri and, in 2020, the Dronacharya Award.
