Dining discovery platform Zest is stepping toward a landscape where standalone smartphone applications take a back seat to messaging interfaces. The startup rolled out a dedicated AI-powered restaurant concierge accessible entirely through standard text messaging. Operating inside ordinary SMS threads much like agents such as Poke or Instinct, the tool delivers dining recommendations and immediately secures table bookings without requiring users to open a separate mobile app.
The move aligns with an industry shift where conversational software takes over tasks that once demanded dedicated downloads. For Zest, the conversational tool turns its recommendation engine into an interactive chat experience where users can move from asking for recommendations to confirming a reservation in consecutive messages.
Spending History Informs Food Recommendations
Zest was founded in November 2024, securing $1.8 million in pre-seed capital from Alexis Ohanian at 776 and Steve Jang at Kindred Ventures. The core differentiator behind its technology is an integration with user credit cards to evaluate where people spend their dining dollars. Financial services provider Plaid handles the underlying transaction data pipeline, mirroring how budgeting tools and consumer banks transfer account information.
The startup isolates transactions specifically tied to food and drink businesses to construct customized taste profiles and city maps. Using confirmed spending records rather than manual reviews or questionnaires, the platform identifies compatible spots for diners whether they are exploring their local neighborhoods or traveling to unfamiliar cities.
Automated Table Bookings via OpenTable and Resy
Zest founder and CEO Mario Gomez-Hall highlighted that the conversational agent has now become the startup's flagship offering. Because the software initializes from places consumers have already patronized alongside dining habits from their social circle, it bypasses the learning curve that general-purpose chatbots typically require before delivering relevant answers.
Users engage the concierge by sending a text message to (212) 470-6067. The assistant integrates with major reservation platforms including OpenTable, Resy, and SevenRooms. It cross-references current availability against user constraints, letting diners review dining times and finalize bookings without leaving their messaging app.
Group Messaging Tools and Preference Polling
A key capability of the text agent is its integration into group message threads. When invited into a multi-person conversation, the assistant analyzes the dietary requirements and dining tendencies of everyone in the group to recommend options that cater to the collective group.
To resolve group indecision, the concierge includes built-in polling so members can vote directly within the text exchange. Once the group reaches a consensus, the agent confirms the table reservation immediately. Diners can filter requests by specific cuisines, sudden cravings, special occasions, dietary restrictions, or individual neighborhoods. The agent also answers practical inquiries regarding how crowded a venue is, whether wireless internet is available, or by delivering digital menus directly into the chat.
Revenue Strategy and Future Growth
Testing for the conversational concierge began last month, though the startup delayed public availability until reservation workflows were fully functional. The software successfully navigates parameters such as party size, time of day, and location constraints, letting diners text back and forth to pinpoint mutually agreeable reservation slots.
By migrating directly into SMS, Zest intends to expand beyond its early base of several thousand users and establish consistent revenue. Gomez-Hall noted that reservation fees and upcoming food ordering integrations serve as initial monetization streams. Because transaction records allow the system to map personal tastes faster than conventional virtual assistants, the startup is also evaluating long-term plans to recommend retail stores and shopping destinations beyond the restaurant industry.
