Maintaining physical fitness as one grows older often proves to be a significant challenge for many individuals, but the daily routine of honorary Captain Babban Ram, a resident of Rampur alias Sadhupur village in the Revatipur area of Ghazipur, stands out remarkably. Even at the age of over 68 years, he wakes up early in the morning, engages in running, and swims on a regular basis. He firmly believes that staying fit does not require expensive diets or specialized foods, but rather depends heavily on a disciplined lifestyle and regular daily habits.
Waking Up at Four in the Morning for Runs and Swimming
Captain Babban Ram shares that he wakes up every day at four o'clock in the morning. Running and swimming hold a special place in his daily schedule. He runs approximately two to four kilometers on a daily basis. In addition to this, he swims for anywhere between half an hour to an hour from roughly 4:30 AM to 6:00 AM. Before starting his main run, he also sprints across short distances. According to him, regular physical activity is an integral part of his life. The strict discipline that he developed during his long service in the Indian Army remains clearly visible in his everyday routine.
Simple Meals, Timely Breakfast, and Light Dinners
When it comes to his dietary preferences, Captain Babban Ram maintains a simple outlook. He states that one should never fuss over special delicacies and should instead eat whatever lentils, flatbreads, and vegetables are readily available at home. He makes it a point to finish his breakfast by eight o'clock in the morning. He has his dinner at around seven in the evening and emphasizes the importance of eating lightly at night. Eating meals on time and avoiding unnecessary fuss over food form core parts of his lifestyle. Captain Babban Ram notes that over the past 20 to 30 years, while traveling by trains, he has often quenched his thirst using station tap water instead of buying bottled water. However, this personal habit alone should not be considered the sole reason for his robust fitness, as ensuring the safe quality of drinking water remains essential.
Lasting Lessons Learned from the Indian Army
Captain Babban Ram served in the 150 Field Regiment of the Indian Army for about 30 years and eventually retired with the rank of honorary Captain. While serving in the armed forces, he got the opportunity to cultivate a deep interest in swimming and athletics. Following his retirement in 2009, he took a brief break for a few years and then made a strong comeback to competitive sports in 2021. Since then, he has continuously participated in national-level veterans' athletics and swimming competitions. According to the details provided by him, he has bagged nearly 50 medals so far. Recently, at a national event held in Coimbatore, he clinched five medals across various swimming and track events.
Key Lessons and Expert Perspectives on Fitness
Babban Ram advises that individuals should engage in regular physical activities suited to their own capacities and maintain simplicity in their dietary habits. He mentions that he has never suffered from health issues like blood pressure, high cholesterol, or joint pain, and has never had to take any medicinal tablets. While this reflects his personal journey, it does not serve as a guaranteed medical outcome for others. According to health experts, the intensity and type of exercise must always match an individual's age, physical capacity, and health status. Seeking appropriate medical consultation before adopting any new or rigorous workout routine is also necessary. The life story of Captain Babban Ram highlights the profound value of consistency, an active lifestyle, and lifelong discipline.
