Kapil Dev Rawat, a resident of Jamui district, recently executed a breathtaking paragliding jump from an astonishing altitude of 24,000 feet in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. While most people in their seventies prefer a quiet and settled lifestyle, Rawat chose to soar high above the clouds, capturing the imagination of adventure enthusiasts nationwide.
Overcoming the Initial Terror of the Abyss
The transition from the solid ground to the open air was a test of sheer courage. Reflecting on the moment he took the leap, Rawat admitted that the first few seconds were filled with intense anxiety. As he plunged into the open sky, he felt a sudden rush of fear, thinking that a single mistake could cost him his life. While planning a vacation to Himachal Pradesh with his family, Rawat had read about an eighty-year-old woman and a seventy-five-year-old man who had successfully paraglided. He realized that if people of that age could conquer the skies, there was no reason for him to hold back. This realization cemented his determination to try the extreme sport himself.
Upon arriving in Himachal Pradesh, he noticed a significant difference in the scale of his planned attempt compared to others. Most elderly adventurers before him had jumped from heights of 4,500 feet, 8,000 feet, or at most 10,000 feet. Rawat, however, decided to push the limits of senior paragliding by opting for a launch from 24,000 feet, a height that presents a challenge even for younger, experienced gliders.
A Life of Adventure Supported by Family
Back in his hometown of Patasanda, located in the Gidhaur block of Jamui, Rawat leads a relatively modest life running a hotel in the local Gidhaur market. Despite the daily routine of managing a business, his passion for travel and exploration has always remained his driving force. He regularly closes his shop temporarily just to satisfy his wanderlust and explore new destinations across the country.
This remarkable journey would not have been possible without the unwavering encouragement of his family. Rawat credits his two sons for standing by his adventurous choices and supporting his dreams. With their backing, he was able to convert his aspiration into reality.
